PhD Position in Digital and Automation Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry
NTNU in collaboration with industry is establishing a new Research & Innovation Program in Digital and Automation Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry with up to 40 PhD/PostDoc positions.
The objective of the program is to develop new digital and automation methods and technologies to increase efficiency, safety and environmental care in all operations in O&G activities.
Program research areas
The program is organized as a multidisciplinary eco-system across seven departments at NTNU: Geoscience and Petroleum, Engineering Cybernetics, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Information Security and Communication Technology, Sociology and Political Science, Industrial Economics and Technology Management. The research program covers the corresponding multidisciplinary areas of digitalization and automation in the oil and gas industry. Most of the program’s research projects will be linked to specific digitalization/automation cases originating from the industrial partners. Innovation is a vital part of the program.
On the petroleum engineering side, the program and its research projects are organized around the following main areas:
- Field development and operational planning
- Drilling & well construction efficiency
- Reservoir monitoring and management
- Operational and production efficiency, reliability, maintenance and safety
On the digital side, the program involves application and research within the following areas:
- Big data analytics
- Automatic control technologies
- Machine learning and artificial intelligence
- Autonomy and robotics
- Data-driven and model-based optimization
- Automatic estimation, identification and detection
- Stochastic programming
- Cyber/information security
- Organizational and economical aspects of digitalization/automation

NTNU welcomes applications for PhD positions from candidates with MSc degrees in petroleum engineering, in disciplines within the digital domain (e.g. cybernetics/automatic control, applied mathematics, computer science, cyber/information security, electrical/mechanical engineering, etc), or in economics/organizational studies. The candidates should have competence and interests in at least one of the areas indicated above as well as strong motivation, personal qualifications and ability to work on applied multidisciplinary research projects.
Successful applicants for PhD positions will be appointed for a period of 3 years, with possible extension to the fourth year if the candidate undertakes teaching related duties. The main working place will be at the NTNU campus in Trondheim. For positions in cyber security, the main working place will be at the NTNU campus in Gjøvik.
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 900 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the PhD positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

It is a prerequisite that the PhD scholar applies for and is granted admission to the NTNU PhD studies as soon as possible after employment. NTNUs PhD-rules require a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average ECTS grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). Applicants are kindly requested to send a diploma supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grading system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree.
Excellent English skills, written and spoken, are required. Applicants from non-European countries where English is not the official language must present an official language test report. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are: TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test) IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted) CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
