The Department of Clinical Pathology is a new department in the Melbourne Medical School. Located within state of the art facilities at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre and at the University of Melbourne, the Department of Clinical Pathology will have responsibility for delivering education, research of the highest calibre and engagement within the clinical discipline of pathology.
The Department’s focus initially will be on the molecular defects of tumours and the utility of applying the knowledge of these defects to prognostication and treatment of patients with cancer. Relationships with the health service based departments of pathology will be key to this role. Whilst the initial research focus of the Department is cancer research, it also has a more generalist remit for graduate learning and teaching and engagement across the broader areas of clinical pathology.
The Chair of Pathology and Head of Department of Clinical Pathology will provide outstanding academic and administrative leadership, promoting innovative and high-impact research in the Department, the Faculty and the University. Excellence in teaching performance will ensure significant contributions to the Doctor of Medicine and contribute to Honours, Masters and PhD student cohorts.
To be successful in this key leadership role, it is expected that candidates will have a medical qualification, a Fellowship of the College of Pathologists or equivalent and a research doctoral degree in a relevant discipline; performance and pre-eminence as a scholar of international standing; world-class research output in high-impact scientific publications; and substantial competitive grants won, managed and led.
A collegiate, collaborative, interdisciplinary and translational orientation that enhances the Department’s research culture will be critical. Demonstrated experience leading collaborative initiatives with community, industry and government that add significant value will set candidates apart.
This is a full-time, continuing appointment as a Level E Professor. Appointment as Head of Department will be for five years initially with a possible continuation by negotiation for a further term. An attractive salary package will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
