PhD position within Power electronics for fully-electric Work-Class Remotely Operated Vehicles (WROVs), (IE-041-2018)
The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (IE), http://www.ntnu.edu/ie at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), has a vacancy for a 100% position (3 years) as a PhD student at the Department of Electric Power Engineering (IEL), http://www.ntnu.edu/elkraft. The described PhD position is part of the research within the “High-Efficiency all-electric DC supply systems for subsea work-class remotely operated vehicles (HEROVs)” project. HEROVs is a joint research project between NTNU and two industrial partners: Argus Remote Systems AS based in Bergen Norway and Ingeteam Power Technology S.A. based in Bilbao Spain.
Information about the department of Electrical Power Engineering
Currently there are 12 Professors, 7 Associate Professors and 4 Lecturers at the Department of Electric Power Engineering. In addition, there are 4 Adjunct Professors, 2 Adjunct Associate Professors, 9 Postdoctoral researchers, 3 Researchers, about 35 PhD students, and 15 technical/administrative staff. Research activities are organized under two research groups: Power Systems Group and Power Technology Group. The department has a good laboratory infrastructure for research and education, as well as a mechanical workshop, supported by a technical staff of 10 persons.
The department has a wide range of teaching responsibilities, ranging from fundamental education in electric power engineering for other engineering students, Master’s programs in Energy and Environment, International MSc programs within Electric Power Engineering and Wind Energy, as well as PhD education and continuing education.
Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are currently used in multiple subsea and offshore activities. They are needed in the oil and gas sector (for intervention, trenching, umbilical and power cable laying, repair and maintenance tasks) as well as in other niche applications requiring subsea operations (e.g. military, forensics). Considering the steep increase in offshore wind farm installations, ROVs use is expected to increase in the ocean renewable energy sector, where extensive cable-based collection grids are required. The focus of HEROVs project is on work-class ROVs, which have power ratings exceeding 200 kVA and operating in water depths up to 11000 m.
Today, the state-of-the-art WROVs use hydraulic systems on board in order to meet the high power demands of their manipulators and propulsion. However, a trend towards modernizing WROVs by designing them as fully electric is clearly observed. This will enable higher reliability, reduced weight, improved efficiency and controllability, while the environmental risks associated with possible leakages from the hydraulic circuits will be eliminated.
The goal of HEROVs is to design, analyze and experimentally verify high-efficiency all-electric DC power supply systems for WROVs based on medium-voltage DC (MVDC) technology. In particular, within HEROVs both the design and optimization of the MVDC distribution grid and the design and optimization of power electronic converters employed on WROVs will be investigated.
Currently, there is one vacant PhD position available at NTNU within the field of “Power electronics for fully-electric Work-Class Remotely Operated Vehicles (WROVs)”.
The successful PhD candidate is expected to design and optimize novel power electronic converters for the future fully-electric WROVs. More specifically, the PhD candidate will investigate the power semiconductor requirements and performance including investigations of novel semiconductor materials (e.g. SiC), their control circuits and auxiliary systems. The PhD project will be implemented using theoretical investigations (simulations and numerical calculations) and advanced experimental validations of various MVDC power electronic converter prototypes under various operating conditions.
Applicants must hold a M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) within electrical engineering with a specialization in Power Electronics. Applicants with a laboratory experience on power electronics (design of power electronic converters prototypes, programming of FPGAs and DSPs etc.) will be preferred. Scientific publications in international journals and conferences are merited.
Applicants are required to submit a one-page research proposal within the proposed research area.

The PhD position is expected to start in May 2018.
Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

Appointments are made in accordance with the regulations in force regarding terms of employment for PhD candidates issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, with relevant parts of the additional guidelines for appointment as a PhD candidate at NTNU. The PhD position is in code 1017 Research fellow, and is remunerated at a gross NOK 436 900 – 537 700 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2% is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
