One Master’s by research position working with concrete sleeper testing affiliated to the Centre for Railway Engineering, CQUniversity, Rockhampton Campus, Australia

This new scholarship, funded by the Australasian Centre for Railway Innovation (ACRI) and its partners, focuses on testing older concrete sleepers to determine sleeper condition and estimate their remaining service life. The project title is called “Advancing concrete sleeper life prediction” and includes categorising, testing, analysing and developing processes to improve remaining service life estimates of in-service concrete sleepers. The project includes innovative research exploring the latest advances in destructive and non-destructive concrete testing combined with the challenges of testing sleepers in a railway environment.

Working Environment and Scholarship Conditions:

The scholarship is for a student studying a Master’s Degree by research.The student will be based at the CQUniversity, North Rockhampton Campus and the research is affiliated with the Centre of Railway Engineering ( at Central Queensland University, Rockhampton, Australia. This will allow her/him to have access to laboratory infrastructure and all the required software packages and hardware systems for safe testing and the development of new technologies. The scholarship is competitive by international and national standards (AUD 35,000 /year tax free, for 2 years).


The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree or similar in Civil Engineering. Candidates with research or project experience in chemical testing of concrete, non-destructive concrete testing or concrete test procedures will receive additional merit during the selection process. It is desirable to have relevant publications in recognised conferences/journals. This project will require the candidate to be highly autonomous but he/she must also be able to work in a team environment. Excellent English language skills are mandatory.
