Established in 2017 the School of Design comprises the disciplines of Industrial Design, Digital Design (including Animation and Interactive Media) and Communication Design. The school builds on RMIT's leading national and international reputation in design research through a range of design approaches and contexts from the experimental to the applied. RMIT is internationally recognised for its excellence in design research and practice, industry and community collaborations and its higher degrees by research.
This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced design researcher and research leader to lead the establishment of a vibrant design culture within the School of Design.
The Role and Your Responsibilities
Reporting to the Dean of the School, the Associate Dean Research and Innovation is a critical leadership and management role responsible for driving learning and teaching quality, research relevance and industry engagement for the discipline. They will be expected to work across disciplines and schools to deliver effective learning and teaching and research outcomes.
The Associate Dean Research and Innovation is accountable for providing strategic leadership and mentoring to the design disciplines, consistent with the University and College strategic plans and objectives. This will be done in collaboration with the Associate Deans Discipline and the Dean, and will contribute to the School Executive's strategic planning and development of the School. This is an integrated leadership role that includes research and industry engagement.
The Associate Dean is a member of the School Executive team and will work collaboratively with all members of the management team and staff across the school to ensure the School achieves its strategic objectives.
Skills & Experience Required
To be successful in the role you will possess strong leadership skills and experience in leading and managing academic teams in a collegiate environment to deliver strategic objectives. You will bring with you a well-developed understanding of budget management, quality management, and good governance.
The School will value your capacity to think strategically based on organisational priorities and objectives whilst displaying a high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills. These skills will be required for your interactions with senior executives and external bodies and your involvement with cross disciplinary and cross-sectoral teams. Your leadership and expertise in research along with your substantial academic, research and relevant professional achievement will contribute to the overall standing of the School both nationally and internationally.
Mandatory A PhD combined with knowledge and achievements that meet the professorial criteria.
A Working with Children check is required for this role.
