Description of Work Unit

Housing and Dining Facilities provides building and support services for the department of Housing and Dining Services by ensuring a clean, safe and maintained living and learning environments for internal and external customers and University guests.

Position Summary

The Environmental Service Technician within Housing and Dining Facilities assist in providing a safe and clean living and learning environment for students, staff, and university guests. This is achieved by responding to daily cleaning and maintenance of housing facilities with a focus on sustainability and customer service.

Note to Applicants: This posting will be used to fill several Environmental Service Technician positions. The shift for these positions will be Monday – Friday, 12:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

Six months of full-time custodial or laundry experience.

Preferred Qualifications

The highly desired candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, personal characteristics, and experience directly related and critical to this position:

  • Experience in both residential and commercial environments
  • Experience with entering personal living spaces with an awareness and good work practices for privacy and discretion of residents and guests
  • Experience working with a team to complete tasks.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to teach peer custodian’s how to perform job tasks.
  • Demonstrated experience using green cleaning practices.

Essential Job Duties

Job Duty Category Residential Living Custodial Duty/Responsibility

  • Keeps residential living, learning and dining environments clean and safe using “green” practices: environmentally safe chemicals, water conservation, recycling, conserving energy by turning off lights, etc.
  • Cleaning and/or disinfecting is performed for showers, toilets, walls, sinks, drains, vents, trash receptacles, ceilings, floors, mirrors, vanities, windows, appliances, furnishings and all hand hold surfaces.
  • Provides cleanup for blood borne pathogen situations not handled by EHS.
  • Clean hall and room carpet in residential living, learning and dining environments by vacuuming and shampooing. Clean hard surface floors by sweeping, mopping, buffing, stripping and refinishing. Remove gum.
  • Cleans around outside of building by picking up trash, sweeping, removing gum, washing sidewalks and snow/ice removal. May provide building opening and lockup procedures.
  • Dispose of trash/recyclables from internal/external receptacles.
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment and safety procedures for the above tasks.

Percentage Of Time 65% Job Duty Category Customer Service/Special Duties Duty/Responsibility

  • Learn, apply and demonstrate how to enter personal living space with an awareness/enforcement of privacy and discretion for residents and guests, dealing with living habits, state of undress, shyness, etc.
  • Developing awareness/enforcement of student/guest behavior expectations, identifying “red flags” such as alcohol, drugs, fire alarms, unhealthy living conditions, etc. Remind the residents of personal safety (locking doors and windows, un­propping EXIT doors, etc.)
  • Have appropriate social interactions with residents and guests and be aware of their personal space, using appropriate communication and providing programmatic support.
  • Cleanup after construction projects
  • Provides seasonal “Hotel/Motel” summer conference services prepping residence hall rooms for guests including setups, linens, making beds, removing trash, and providing maid service. Turning the rooms over numerous times, often requiring overtime (after work hours or on scheduled days off) to ready rooms and public areas for the next conference group.

Percentage Of Time 20% Job Duty Category Continuous Maintenance Duty/Responsibility

  • Performs minor maintenance including but not limited to replacing lamps, minor painting, carpet trimming and drain cleaning.
  • The ability to assist and shadow maintenance staff.
  • Inspects and services Environmental Services equipment and machinery.
  • Check fire extinguishers and lights.
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment and safety procedures for the above tasks.

Percentage Of Time 10% Job Duty Category Meeting Attendance and Other Duties Duty/Responsibility

  • Attend all required/recommended training/classes/seminars provided by HDS to accomplish the above, which include ethics, safety, diversity, communications, BBP and any applicable training in providing the best customer service, etc.
  • Develop professional skills and communication to effectively interact with live in residents and guests.
  • Attend all meetings, committees and department sponsored functions.
  • Enter work time and leave requests into designated software systems.
  • Comply with Operations Management Handbook, University Departmental Procedures and Policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
