In 2016, MQ launched a ten-year Indigenous strategy that aims to increase the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as both students and staff, and to recognise the unique contribution of knowledges and lived experiences by Indigenous people to the university environment as important to the intellectual and social capital of the University.

The Fellowship position will be located with the Department of Indigenous Studies, which is situated within the Faculty of Arts. Our academic programs include an Indigenous Studies major, the distance mode Master of Indigenous Education and a higher degree research program.

The role:

These roles aim to increase accessibility of Indigenous PhD students into academia, to contribute to the knowledge base of the university across all faculties providing Indigenous knowledges and perspectives from an Indigenous standpoint into curriculum, learning and teaching and research. MQ seeks to appoint Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander early career academics as Associate Lecturers subsidiary to studentship. The successful applicants will be expected to contribute to the teaching, research and community engagement activities in the Department of Indigenous Studies through a program of support and mentoring. This position is aimed at supporting, developing and sustaining Indigenous excellence in teaching and research at the University.

The positions are appointed through a partnership agreement between the Department of Indigenous Studies and Walanga Muru, MQ Indigenous Strategy. The University is committed to working in collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities to produce the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders. The University maintains its commitment to this through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Plan 2017-2020 which promotes culturally strong workplace environments, attraction, retention and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, Leadership and the inclusion of Aboriginal voices and presence across all core areas of the University.

These positions will contribute from an Aboriginal perspective to promote wider student and staff understanding of Indigenous Australia and the skills to work effectively in Indigenous contexts.

The positions aim to:

  • Contribute knowledges and experiences to relevant Department’s in implementing and maintaining the Indigenous Connected Curriculum Framework,
  • Contribute knowledges and experiences to Indigenous research
  • being undertaken within the relevant Department, including promoting effective relationships with Aboriginal people and communities,
  • Build an academic track record and broader qualifications and experiences that will contribute to a future academic career.

Indigenous knowledge is an important and unique element of higher education. It contributes to economic productivity by equipping graduates with the capacity to work across Australian society and with Indigenous communities.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Aboriginality. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification for these positions and is authorised under section 14(d) of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 197. Aboriginality is inclusive of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander values, perspectives, connections and knowledges that will contribute to an academic environment that privileges Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander standpoints.
  • Enrolled in a PhD in relevant discipline and demonstrated capacity to complete such study within three years.
  • Previous qualifications and professional experience in the relevant discipline field.
  • Proven record of work in and with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities which demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of Aboriginal peoples and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Evidence of potential to undertake lecturing and tutoring.
  • Commitment to the delivery of high quality teaching, including the preparation of teaching and course material.

Appointments will be at Level A

Salary Package:  from $70,374 (Level A, Step 1), plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading
