Description of Work Unit

Colorado State University is a large research, land-grant institution and employs over 7,000 full and part-time faculty, exempt and non-exempt professionals, and classified staff. The University’s Human Resources Department is responsible for a broad range of activities including, but not limited to: all employee benefits; payroll; compensation; HR service center; recruitment, selection and classification for State Classified employees as well as general oversight of the State Personnel System within the University; employee relations; personnel policy interpretation; employee records and personnel action processing; and the human resource management information systems (HRIS).

Position Summary

The Compensation/Classification Consultant is a team member of the Colorado State University Human Resources department. This position is an integral part of the job evaluation (classification and compensation) process for both Administrative Professional (at-will) and State Classified employees. The position participates in the development, implementation, and administration of job classification and compensation programs to ensure competitive, equitable and market based opportunities for employees in support of University goals and objectives. The Compensation/Classification Consultant acts as the Human Resource expert through analyzing, evaluating, monitoring and extrapolating results to develop recommendations. This position will understand the University’s classification and compensation philosophy and principles as well as have a working knowledge of market competitive pay practices to provide consultative services to hiring managers and perform other duties as assigned.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Human Resources, Business, Public Administration or a related field and a minimum two (2) years of experience supporting compensation and/or classification functions.
  • Bachelor’s degree with two years of general HR experience in an HR environment and a minimum two (2) years of experience supporting compensation and/or classification functions.
  • Colorado Department of Public Administration Job Evaluation Certification or the ability to become certified within one year from hire.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience/proficiency with online applicant tracking/position management systems.
  • Experience in higher education or public sector classification and compensation environment.
  • Certified Professional in Human Resources (SPHR/PHR).
  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) or Compensation Management Specialist (CMS).

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Job Evaluation/Classification Duty/Responsibility

  • Provide consultation to campus constituents with regard to development of position descriptions, University policies/practices, and state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Conduct classification/job evaluation and compensation review for new or revised positions to assess elements of qualification and responsibility including supervision, decision making, interaction/communication, University impact and position requirements.
  • Evaluate University positions for Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and State Personnel System exemption status.
  • Determine job family, category and level for Administrative Professional positions and collaborate on State Classified positions.
  • Gather sufficient information to support job evaluation and classification decisions and respond to classification or FLSA appeals as requested.
  • Participate in the administration of classification and compensation review programs.

Percentage Of Time 50 Job Duty Category Communication and Training Duty/Responsibility

  • Develop communication materials and conduct training on creating position descriptions, classification guidelines and compensation related topics.
  • Work in partnership with the human resources team to ensure the classification/compensation program is in coordination with all other HR deliverables.
  • Respond to questions (emails, phone calls, meetings) from campus constituents with regard to FLSA, state classified conversions, applicant tracking system (cloning, position transfers, new positions, etc.).

  • Collaborate with HR staff on compensation surveys.
  • Collect market salary data and analyze survey results against internal positions.
  • Identify internal pay issues and recommend solutions.

  • Work with Office of Equal Opportunity to to ensure the applicant tracking system meets compensation and classification needs and recommend updates as necessary.
  • Maintain online position descriptions and position documentation in support of classification or compensation decisions for appeals or audits.
