The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University seeks applications for a non-tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor in Veterinary Communication. We are looking for someone with research and teaching experience in health professions education to transfer these skills to veterinary medicine. Like physician-patient encounters in pediatric medicine, veterinarian-client-patient interactions require effective communication to gather information, build client relationships, provide structure to the clinical interview, and educate clients to achieve clinical outcomes.
The Colorado State University (CSU) communication curriculum is a world renowned model among veterinary colleges and bestowed accolades from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education. One of our faculty has recently been recognized by the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (AACH) with a prestigious teaching award. Veterinary students undergo an intensive and rigorous biomedical and professional curriculum to meet day one competencies for veterinary practice. Building communication curricula and research initiatives in veterinary medicine has been highly reliant on collaboration and mentorship with experts in medical communication.
CSU veterinary students receive 50 hours of highly experiential communication education integrated throughout the curriculum. The program conducts the FRANK and Communication Coaching Skills workshops with a national reputation for transformative continuing education. The assistant or associate professor will coordinate, instruct, and coach communication coursework, including 3 communication modules offered in “Foundations in Veterinary Medicine”, two immersive Junior Practicum “Clinical Communication Skills” Courses, Community Practice Senior Rotation, and the Healer’s Art. This position presents an opportunity to coordinate, instruct and coach in the FRANK and Communication Coaching Skills workshops. In both settings, the significant feature of the instruction is the communication laboratory where students interact with simulated clients (i.e. actor-educators), receive feedback from their peers and client and reflect on a video-recording of their performance. In addition to these educational roles, the assistant or associate professor will obtain grants, conduct outcomes-based research and publish scholarly manuscripts related to health/medical communication or education.
The CSU College of Veterinary Medicine is ranked 3rd in the nation by US News and World Report, and 2nd for federal research funding by Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. This is a 9-month position with two years of summer salary funding. Future opportunities for securing summer salary are possible through consulting, continuing education, grants and research funding.
