Position Summary

The Academic Success Coordinator within the Department of Human Development and Family Studies in the College of Health and Human Sciences is a 12-month, full time Administrative Professional position. The Academic Success Coordinator plays a critical and supportive role in strengthening departmental efforts to provide quality advising and promote undergraduate student success. This position supports an innovative and holistic approach to providing students with the assistance, guidance and resources necessary to be successful. The primary functions of the Academic Success Coordinator are to foster successful transition to the university environment by students in their initial semesters, promote career exploration to ensure students’ choice of appropriate major, foster students’ engagement with faculty advisors/mentors at critical points, and promote timely graduation and retention.

Academic Success Coordinators, in collaboration with faculty, play a critical role in promoting undergraduate student success. The Academic Success Coordinator works directly with students majoring in HDFS in order to foster their academic success by developing, implementing and monitoring an action plan for success. The Academic Success Coordinator’s duties include: advising students, connecting students to faculty, maintaining student records, outreaching to struggling students and probation students, programming various events throughout the year that can foster connection to the major, explore new opportunities, or work on improvement, interacting with faculty members, partnering with campus offices, and teaching HDFS 277: Professional Skills Development, which is a course students take in their first semester in the major. The Academic Success Coordinator works closely with the Internship and Practicum Coordinator, other Academic Success Coordinators, graduate assistants, undergraduate Peer Advisors, faculty, and reports to the Advising Director in HDFS.

Required Job Qualifications

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree AND at least 2 years experience in academic advising working directly with students in a college/university setting, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity through involvement in diversity and inclusion activities.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Master’s degree in Higher Education Counseling/Student Affairs or content area with experience advising transfer students; strong interpersonal and oral communication skills; proven ability to work collaboratively, demonstrated written communication skills as evidenced by application materials, presentation experience, computer skills, data base management skills, demonstrated ability to do detailed work, prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Advising Duty/Responsibility

  • Provide comprehensive advising at the First Year and Transfer Student Orientations, participation in Ram Welcome, and through a continuous advising relationship with students
  • Provide pre-admission advising to students considering both the Human Development and Family Studies major, including both residential and online program delivery models, and the Early Childhood Education major
  • Advise students in the HDFS major and Gerontology Interdisciplinary Minor (GIM) on campus and online and on campus ECE majors
  • Provide attention to issues of first-and second-year students as well as transfer students, including transitions and career exploration
  • Work with students to develop an Academic Plan both in the short and long-term
  • Proactive outreach and tracking, and use data to continually measure progress of individual students through graduation
  • Participate in strategic interventions, local and cross-campus
  • Assist current students, prospective students and their families to understand HDFS ECE, and GIM curricula and opportunities within department
  • Develop familiarity with issues certain populations of students may face (non-traditional students, students of color, first generation college students, transfer students, etc.) and incorporate this perspective into developmental advising approaches
  • Treat each student as an individual, understanding that each student’s path to degree attainment may be different
  • Provide programming for students including probation, connecting students to the department needed and to support a positive transition to post grad life
  • Facilitate and promote honors program involvement by HDFS majors

  • Develop and utilize advising best practices that combine department-level knowledge and campus-wide perspective
  • Actively participate in the Academic Success Coordinator Network, including sharing of best practices
  • Participate in campus-wide intervention strategies and outreach initiatives
  • Develop and maintain detailed knowledge of and referral to campus resources and opportunities

  • Implement intentional plans to engage students and faculty in mentoring and advising relationships
  • Facilitate connections that engage students in faculty research
  • Provide service to the department and initiate special projects as requested by the Department Head

  • Teach HDFS 277, Professional Skills Development online and on campus utilizing Canvas
  • Assist in data collection and tracking as needed for program assessment
  • Coordinate visit days for prospective transfer students
  • Host information sessions for relevant post-graduation opportunities
  • Develop connections to campus resources and opportunities
  • Direct departmental tours for perspective students and families (may involve occasional evenings and weekends)
