Job Purpose

Main Responsibilities are to: 

  • Provide academic leadership and research management 
  • Initiate and undertake research projects in the areas of social work, applied sociology, social policy and/or criminology, including the active pursuit of funded research in their own and related fields 
  • Publish internationally excellent and world leading research 
  • Actively continue to develop the School’s research culture and support the development of the research capacity of colleagues within the School 
  • Initiate and facilitate interdisciplinary developments across the College and University 
  • Work with appropriate colleagues to ensure the implementation of School and College academic strategies, including the achievement of agreed research goals and REF targets 
  • Make a significant contribution to research student supervision in the School 
  • Make a significant contribution to teaching programmes in their own and cognate areas 
  • Play an appropriate leadership role in appropriate forums within the School, College and wider University 
  • Represent the School to relevant external bodies 
  • Any other duties as agreed by the Head of School

Person Specification

Person specification - candidates will have: 

  • An international reputation for excellence in research 
  • An outstanding publications record 
  • Extensive experience of leadership in research and teaching 
  • A strong commitment to academic cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration 
  • An established record of attracting external research funding and of supporting colleagues in applying for research grants 
  • Significant administrative and managerial experience 
  • Research interests that complement and/or strengthen the existing research interests of colleagues within the School 
  • Experience of designing, delivering and organising undergraduate and postgraduate teaching 
  • Excellent presentation skills 
  • The ability to inspire colleagues through personal achievement and professional commitment
