The Associate Professor in Problem Based Learning is to teach (but not limited to) in the Problem-Based Learning academic units and other related activities required by the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program; conduct research/publish, consult, and provide general administration support to teaching within the section the staff is appointed.  To conduct seminars, workshops and visits to appropriate organizations to enhance the delivery of the program. The role of the Associate Professor will involve planning and teaching programs of study, assist in program curriculum development, assessing student progress and provide advice and guidance to students, acting as a mentor where necessary to department staff members. Other duties may include assisting with the enrollment of students and the preparation of their personal study programs amongst others.

Key Responsibilities:

The Associate Professor in Problem Based Learning (PBL) will work with students in their content areas of expertise. The teaching of students will be on a one‐to‐one basis or in small group sessions. The Associate Professor in Problem Based Learning will provide specialized instruction in individual subject areas, answer questions on course content, and aid in the comprehension of course material. The incumbent will also be responsible for leading the revision of learning outcomes and PBL cases and also developing new PBL cases; assist in the moderation of written and clinical exams; and provide means for the improvement of learning and teaching activities for other PBL staff. They must be patient and understanding, as well as be able to assist, evaluate, motivate, develop and integrate their students in learning.

Person Specification:

Master’s degree in any of the Health-related Sciences or Medical Sciences or medical/health education. The applicant should also have a tertiary teaching qualification and must have tertiary PBL teaching experience of over 5 years in a recognized formal medical or health education program at a Medical training institution. Industrial/professional experiences or professional training experiences are necessary.

Outstanding research & publication record and national recognition for academic leadership may be substituted for teaching experience especially in PBL.

An Associate Professor is required to make an outstanding contribution to research and/or scholarship at the University. He/she shall have the ability to also provide an outstanding contribution to the collegial life and will have attained recognition at a national or international level in his/her discipline.
