RESEARCH AND ENTERPRISE
The University of Otago is New Zealand’s first university and one of its finest. It is a leader across all fields of academic endeavour - the humanities, sciences, health sciences and business - regularly topping the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission’s education performance indicators.
Research excellence underpins all academic activity, with over 1,600 research-active staff and more than 4,500 of the University’s 20,000 students studying at the post-graduate level. The University has leadership roles in national Centres of Research Excellence and the country’s National Science Challenges. It hosts 13 multidisciplinary research themes and 14 research centres, including two of the world’s most highly regarded health and development longitudinal studies.
The Director (Research and Enterprise) leads and directs the operations of the University’s Research and Enterprise Office, supporting the research efforts of academic staff and providing strategic leadership in the generation of external research and commercial income from national and international sources.
The Director also provides advice on research, intellectual property and commercialisation of research, and markets the University’s research externally.
Skills and Experience
Reporting and providing policy and strategic advice to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise), the Director will have:
- PhD degree or equivalent experience in an active research environment;
- Demonstrated leadership experience;
- Proven ability in research management;
- Excellent understanding of the diversity of research activity, research consortia, external consulting and funding opportunities in a university environment; and
- Excellent communication and negotiating skills.
Relevant commercial experience may be an advantage.
