Cranfield University is an exclusively postgraduate university specialising in technology and management research whilst demonstrating global leadership in the quality of its education provision (both to students and to executive-level professionals). Critical intellectual mass at Cranfield has recently been organised around eight major themes, Energy, Environment, Leadership and Management, Manufacturing, Transport, Aerospace, Defence and Security, and Agrifood; each supported by a theme leader who provides strategic direction and thought leadership. The themes reflect the core strengths and they pull together the breadth of the talent and experience across the University enabling researchers to apply a multi-disciplinary approach that enables cross-boundary collaboration, benefiting researchers, students and clients.
The aerospace theme is led by Professor Iain Gray, and represents one of the largest academic centres in Western Europe for strategic applied research, development and design within aerospace. This is represented by a number of advanced facilities, tools and expertise in the field, including capabilities unique to Cranfield, and several close commercial partnerships with companies, including Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing and Rolls Royce. The aerospace theme at Cranfield has also seen significant University investment over recent years, including the development of a new Aerospace Integration Research Centre. This is to be built at Cranfield University, with Airbus and Rolls-Royce as co-investment partners, following the award of funding from the Higher Education.
This is a fixed-term position to support the delivery of research on Intelligent mobility for the Innovate UK-funded project HumanDrive. The main aim of the project is to provide a demonstration of driverless car with the capability of emulating human driver behaviour. As a part of the demonstrator development, there is a need to provide quantifiable comparison between the desired and actual behaviours together with traceability of the differences. The experimental data will be collected from the newly built instrumented road - Multi-User Environment for Autonomous Vehicle Innovation (MUEAVI). The post requires the candidate to have excellent programming skills, working on hardware integration and data/sensor fusion. The work will have a large focus on experimental and sensor integration, therefore it is essential to have previous experience working with hardware (ideally autonomous platforms).
The post will involve collaboration with academic and industrial partners. You will need to be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with staff from all organisations across a wide range of disciplines to discuss research methodologies. The ability to communicate, rapidly assess information, resolve problems and respond in a timely manner is essential. You will have a PhD (or be close to completion) in engineering e.g. control, aerospace, applied computational engineering or related discipline. You will be an experimental researcher with broad experience in engineering system integration, with strong programming skills and the ability to set-up bespoke testing facilities. Industrial experience would be an advantage.
