Appointment of Head of Melbourne Medical School

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at The University of Melbourne is the pre-eminent faculty of medical and health sciences in Australia, and a world leader in its class. The Faculty, renowned for global leadership in health research, policy, and practice, is Australia’s largest biomedical research faculty with more than 1,700 academic staff, 4,000 honorary staff and 1,500 graduate researchers and circa 7,000 students. The Faculty takes the lead overall for Australia’s clinical, pre-clinical and health sciences and was ranked 9th globally in 2018 by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The Faculty’s new strategic plan Beyond 2018 sets out the ambition to change the world of health and healthcare and ensure that the Faculty remains Australia’s leading health and biomedical faculty. The Faculty draws upon the research, teaching and clinical efforts of sites throughout Victoria and has long-standing relationships with many of Australia’s leading health research institutes and hospitals such as the Walter and Eliza hall Institute, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Royal Children’s Hospital, Royal Women’s Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre including the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, all co-located on the Parkville university and health precinct.

The Faculty, under the leadership of Professor Shitij Kapur, is now seeking to recruit a new Head of the Melbourne Medical School. This critical appointment will play a decisive role in the Faculty’s future success and impact and thus will require candidates with exemplary academic leadership. The Head of the Melbourne Medical School will ensure that the Melbourne Medical School continues to be a world leader in medical education, health research and improving policy and practice. The role calls for a leader of the highest standing capable of working with academic, research, and clinical partners at local, national, and global levels to enhance the research performance of the University and to achieve excellence in teaching and research outcomes. Candidates will have the international stature, energy, and experience necessary to lead this school in a large and diverse faculty within a dynamic and innovative university.
