A two-year Postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, NTNU. This position is connected to the project "Effective energy use in new and existing buildings using building automation” which is a part of the Faculty of Engineering research strategy. The subproject “Efficient use of solar energy using active facade components with glass” is also linked to a centrally-supported focus area for research in the boundary layer between energy storage, energy efficiency and sensor technology ENERSENSE and the candidate will have possibility to collaborate with an established research group across the relevant fields.

Facade components with glass can be used as active components for saving the surplus of solar energy that is often the cause of overheating of buildings. By using modern systems for energy storage and transmission in combination with digital automatic control systems the use of the solar energy can effectively be monitored and controlled. The problem with “unwanted profit” not only can be exclude but also the surplus of solar energy that would normally be lost can be recovered. Development of methods and mapping of premises for a conscious use of systems for storage and transmission of solar energy that can be integrated into facade components with glass is of strategic importance for energetic self-sufficiency of buildings today and in the future.

The Postdoctoral position will focus on mapping of premises for efficient use of solar energy using active facade components with glass in cold climate. Development of systems for storage and transmission of solar energy that can be integrated into active facade components with glass. Development of a model-building system based on digitized building data.


Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) degree in Civil Engineering with focus on optimization of building energy performance. The candidate must be familiar with energy simulation software and software related to modelling of building envelope. The candidate should also be familiar with digital automatic control systems and object oriented programming. 

Excellent English skills, spoken and written, are required. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).


Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 490,500 per annum before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.

The Postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for 2 years.
