Professor/Associate Professor in Water and Wastewater Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering:
The department is under the Faculty of Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) provides leading international research and education in engineering science with innovation and sustainability as central themes. The department consists of the seven groups Water and Wastewater, Building and Construction, Marine Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Roads Transport and Geomatics, Geotechnical Engineering and Bachelor in Civil Engineering.
The research of the Water and Wastewater group focuses on the entire urban water cycle from user functions such as drinking water extraction, storage, purification and distribution, to wastewater collection, transport, treatment, discharge. Resource recovery from (waste) water, industry water, and urban water management and drainage and stormwater management.The group announces the following vacant professorship/associate professorship in Water and Wastewater Engineering (Water Transportation Systems).
The potential for visionary urban water infrastructure research is large and the worldwide interest high. Future urban water infrastructure demands call for innovative, climate-resilient distribution, drainage, and heat systems; increased flexibility of assets; clever, predictive sensor and control technology; understanding urban hydrology; understanding material aging and soil processes; advanced protection of human and environmental health; and energy- and resource-efficient water systems that are embedded in a circular economy. While the Western countries are faced prevailing obsolete infrastructure, the majority of the world’s population is still deprived of adequate urban water infrastructure services. Sustainable and cost-efficient innovations brought forward by research in the envisaged field may contribute to leapfrogging conventional developments. The key responsibilities of the vacant position include research, education, services, and management in line with the NTNU’s vision of knowledge for a better world.
Successful candidate has the following qualifications:
- A PhD in Civil or Environmental Engineering with a urban water system or a closely related field
- Experience in several application fields and/or scientific disciplinary fields of urban water infrastructure as implemented in the setting of industrialised societies
- A drive for research based innovation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the capacity to communicate effectively with peers, students and stakeholders in the application field
- An excellent track record in scientific publications, acquisition and management of externally funded research projects, and a clear view on required future developments, aiming at a high degree of sustainability in the application field
- Knowledge of the Norwegian stakeholders and actors in the urban water sector is a positive addition.
- Excellent teaching qualifications and qualities
- Fluency in English and the obligation to learn Norwegian within three years.
The expectations of the degree of fulfilment of the above list of requirements will be adjusted for the associate professor level.
The successful applicant for a professorship must be able to document his/her extensive disciplinary qualifications in important fields within the discipline. His/her individual work must document scientific expertise in one or more parts of the discipline, particularly the specialist fields the Professorship has specific responsibility for. Weight will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work.
Weight will be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on documented pedagogical material, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, experience from supervising masters-level students and doctoral candidates, and teaching as well as other pedagogical matters. The evaluation will consider both the quality and the scope.
Academic staff who are employed without having a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses.
The applicants that have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trial lecture.
The Professor is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff in the Department. The Professor is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching program, including continuing education. The Professor is to supervise masters’ students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. The Professor must agree to participate in administrative work.
The Professor is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at the University.
It is assumed that newly-employed staff in academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language are to obtain within three years knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigneers courses provided at the Department of Applied Linguistics. The University provides such courses.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.
Conditions and Employment
Inspiring, excellent education is important to NTNU. If you do not have formal pedagogic training in teaching you will be required to participate in such training with in the first few years of your position.

The position adheres to the Norwegian Government’s policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender.
The position as Professor is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 605 400 per annum.
The position as Associate Professor is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 485 700 per annum.
There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.
