The Director of the Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) will help lead and drive the University’s ambitious education strategy.  Reporting to the Pro Vice Chancellor (Education), the Director will be responsible for a full-time staff of 34 and programmes in three areas: educational innovation, professional development, and student academic success.  DCAD’s education laboratory will foster research and assessment of innovative approaches to teaching and learning, with special emphasis on digitally enhanced education.  The professional development team will focus on enhancing the pedagogical skill and sophistication of academics, from postgraduate students to established members of staff.  And the student academic development hub will directly support students, working with them from before matriculation through the completion of their degrees.  

In December 2017 Durham broke ground on a new state-of-the-art teaching and learning facility.  When building work is complete in 2019, DCAD will be housed on its top floor, providing an educational hub for the entire campus.

The Director will hold an appointment in one of Durham’s academic departments, at either the Associate Professor or Professor rank, with 80% time allocated leading DCAD. Strong candidates will possess an established record in pedagogic scholarship and/or research in the field of teaching and learning.  Area of specialisation is open, though we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in digital education.  Strong candidates will also demonstrate the ability to develop fruitful relationships with colleagues from different disciplines, lead and inspire diverse teams, and bring a sophisticated understanding of best practices to the University.

Appointment to the Director role will be made at either Associate Professor (Grade 9) or Professor (Grade 10) equivalent.  

DU will offer an excellent salary and benefits package for the successful candidate.  Grade 9 salary scale begins at £50,618 and Grade 10 appointment based on our professorial Pay Scales (starting at £62,218) but the salary may be considerably higher depending on experience (regardless of whether a grade 9 or 10).
