Description of Work Unit

This unit exists to handle all university freight, accountable mail and parcel receipts and shipments of an official nature; initiate damage claims; deliver and pick up freight, shredding, and scanning at campus locations; distribution of lab alcohol; and coordinate warehouse operations. This unit serves as the primary point of contact for the commercial freight carriers.

Position Summary

This position exists to deliver incoming freight and parcel shipments from vendors and other sources to campus departmental recipients in an accurate and timely manner. Position also delivers accountable mail and picks up shredding and scanning work orders at various campus locations. Position must also exercise and maintain accountability for items in custody including appropriate recordkeeping.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this position applicants must have:

  • Two full-time years (24 months) of experience operating delivery vehicles including two-ton capacity single axle vehicles.
  • Must have a current valid State of Colorado driver’s license, Commercial Class C with the ability to gain Hazmat endorsement within 90 days of employment.

  • Attention to detail in verifying deliver acknowledgements
  • Flexibility and a willingness to learn new tasks and assist other employees when needed
  • Knowledge and experience with balancing truck loads to minimize damage to loads and equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to abide by Federal, State, University and industry rules, regulations and guidelines for safe and efficient handling of a variety of materials
  • Service demeanor, treating all constituents as valuable customers
  • Ability to use computerized tracking systems and email as well as an ability to learn new computer programs as needed
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Colorado State University streets and layout
  • Experience working in an active campus environment

Driving and Delivery


  • Operate two-ton capacity single axel vehicles to deliver and pick up all incoming freight, parcels, accountable mail, shredding, scanning and storage/warehouse products at university department’s campus locations.
  • Obey all traffic and safety laws, rules, and policies while delivering and/or picking up from the campus community.
  • Move boxes occasionally weighing in excess of 100 lbs.
  • Move other freight shipments sometimes weighing in excess of 2,000 lbs. with the use of forklift truck, pallet jack, hand truck or other material handling equipment.
  • Verify delivery acknowledgement (signed forms or electronic equivalent) agrees with manifests to complete the chain of custody and accountability for which this position is responsible from Central Receiving dock to campus delivery locations.
  • Reconcile any differences and reports problems to the Central Receiving supervisor and or lead supervisor as appropriate.

  • Cross train and assists in both receiving freight and parcels from vendors and commercial carriers by unloading freight/parcels using forklift, pallet jack, hand truck and/or other material handling equipment necessary to the task and facilitates the shipping of freight and parcels moving outbound to the appropriate carrier.
  • Training will be provided for forklift operation certification.

Parcel Sortation & Route Design


  • Use the established delivery priority system to prepare shipments for delivery to the campus department by sorting items by the delivery route then loading vehicles according to the delivery sequence of the route.
  • Factor in environmental constraints such as road closure, weather conditions, student traffic to load CSU trucks for delivery.
  • Use training and experience to assure that truck loads are balanced to minimize damage to loads and equipment and injury to personnel.

  • Use Federal, State, University and industry rules, regulations and guidelines for the safe and efficient handling of hazardous materials, perishables, biomedical supplies, live animals and plants or any other shipment requiring special attention.
  • Attend training as appropriate to assure safe handling of hazardous materials. While this position normally does not open any containers or actively work with these materials, Department of Transportation hazardous material emergency procedures and precautions must be known as a contingency measure.
