Description of Work Unit
The Chemical and Biological Engineering program at CSU has had a record of very high-quality education and research since its inception in 1977. There are currently 450 undergraduate and 32 full time graduate students in the program, 13 tenure-track faculty, and two full time Professors of Practice. All of the faculty hold at least one joint appointment in departments or schools inside and outside the college, and in that capacity, advise an additional 18 PhD students in chemistry, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, molecular, cellular, and integrative neuroscience, and materials science and engineering. The Department has integrated both chemical and biological sciences into our undergraduate curriculum and offers one of the only ABET-accredited Chemical and Biological Engineering BS degrees in the country. Our faculty are engaged in exciting research work, with emphases on bioenergy, biochemical and biomedical engineering, experimental and computational systems biology, synthetic biology and metabolic engineering, bioanalytical devices and microfluidics, polymer science, and biomaterials. The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Colorado State University seeks applications and nominations for a tenure-track chemical and biological engineering faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level. The successful candidate will develop, or will have developed, a well-funded research program and actively participate in education and scholarship activities. This search is focused on applicants with interests and expertise in microbiome engineering applied to human, animal, plant or soil biology or environmental systems. Microbiome engineering is an emerging field that aims to move beyond characterization of microbiomes, to manipulate, recombine, and control the collective properties, behaviors, and functions of interdependent microbial communities (i.e., viruses, bacteria, archaea, and microbial eukaryotes, including fungi).
This position is part of a University-wide microbiome cluster hire of faculty focused on the functional and structural aspects of microbiomes, and their ecological relevance and applications to human, animal, plant and soil biology and environmental systems. Faculty hired in this cluster will complement and extend ongoing microbiome research in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering, the Warner College of Natural Resources, and the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Health and Human Sciences, and Natural Sciences. The candidate hired for this position will be expected to collaborate with other microbiome researchers across campus to enhance interdisciplinary microbiome research.
Required Job Qualifications
A Ph.D. or equivalent (expected by March 31, 2018) in chemical or biological engineering, or related field, is required.
Preferred Job Qualifications
The successful candidate will develop, or will have developed, a well-funded research program and actively participate in education and scholarship activities.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of accomplishments in systems and/or synthetic biology, commensurate with rank.
Ability to advance the department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion through research, teaching and outreach with relevant programs, goals and activities.
