Description of Work Unit
At the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community. This work unit exists to instruct professional veterinary students/veterinary technician interns, triage and provide nursing care to emergency/critical care patients, to collect blood/tissue samples for evaluation, to perform physical examinations, to maintain accurate medical records, to appropriately communicate concerns to primary clinicians, and to provide clear and accurate information to the clients whose animals are hospitalized.
This position provides technical and nursing support to CCS patients and VTH clinicians, students and clients. The position triages emergencies, provides nursing care to hospitalized patients, recovers post-operative patients, and communicates with CCU team on patient concerns. This position also instructs vet technician students, junior and senior professional veterinary students.
This position is strictly overnight with typical hours falling between 10:00 pm and 8:00 am and is therefore eligible for shift differential pay. Note to Applicants: Although this position is considered hourly with hours being anywhere from 0-40/week, the successful candidate can expect a nearly full-time schedule when starting in the position.
Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology AND one year of experience assisting in the direct care of emergency and critical care small animal patients (e.g.: canine and feline).
Must be willing and able to work an overnight shift as a condition of employment.
Two years of experience assisting in the direct care of emergency and critical care small animal patients (e.g.: canine, feline) will substitute for the two year Associate degree requirement.
If using experience to meet the minimum qualification, then a total of three years of experience is required (full-time equivalent, part-time experience is calculated.)
The highly desired candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, personal characteristics, and experience directly related and critical to this position:
- Certified Veterinary Technologies, Registered Veterinary Technologist or Licensed Veterinary Technologist.
- One+ year of experience in an emergency and/or critical care position.
- Demonstrated experience providing customer service in a fast-paced environment (e.g.: high traffic, stressful, or rapid problem solving).
- A strong desire to learn and advance medical and technical knowledge base.
- Proactively teach and courage in a supportive manner.
- Ability to be compassionate and empathetic to clients in emotional situations.

Essential Job Duties

- Assist in providing clinical support to Critical Care Service patients under the direction of senior nurses and clinicians
- Proper restraint of patients without injury to patient, self, or others.
- Properly triage all CCS patients and effectively communicate concerns to senior nurses or clinician
- Ability to perform proficiently the nursing skills for this level
- Able to perform venipuncture and place IV catheters
- Ability to assist in CPR
- Accurately perform basic drug calculations
- Able to observe and recognize changes in patient status.
- Properly perform medical treatments on hospitalized patients, assist with clinical procedures and direct patient care.

- Instruct professional veterinary students and veterinary technician interns.
- Maintain the professional function and appearance of three work areas by stocking, organizing, and cleaning.

- Assist students in learning various techniques, protocols, and procedures.
- Attend and assist in shift change case rounds.

- Thorough knowledge of medical documentation to include electronic medical record, treatment sheets, observation sheets, communication sheets, clinicians’ orders, and the medical record.
- Strong working knowledge of the billing system and ensure that all charges for all procedures are recorded in an accurate and timely manner for all CCS.
- Enter all patient information on to nurses board or triage board
- Visually inspect all patients before discharges.
- Make sure that all paperwork is complete (i.e. Controlled Drug form)
Percentage Of Time 15 Job Duty Category Maintain Service Areas Duty/Responsibility
- Responsible for cleaning and upkeep of rooms.
- Maintain all equipment within rooms.
- Check drugs and supplies for expiration date and stock supplies when needed.
- Sweep and mop floors if needed
- Empty trash cans and laundry daily as needed
- Submit work orders to ensure proper repairs are made
