The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology invites applications from qualified individuals for a three-year PhD position.

The Department

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies is part of the Faculty of Humanities and is located at Dragvoll, Trondheim. The Department offers Bachelor and Master programs in philosophy and religious studies, is responsible for the compulsory introductory course in theory and history of science for all the University’s students, and hosts the Program for Applied Ethics.

Project Description

The project consists of two parts. The first is carrying out the Responsible Research and Innovation aspect of the OXYMOD project in collaboration with the subproject leader and supervisor. The main aspects of this consist in mapping the research within the project, and engaging the project partners and stakeholders in a discussion on the research. The two RRI focus areas are the project’s contribution to a turn towards a bio-based economy and the societal perception of new bio-based product alternatives in the market.

The second, and main part of the PhD work is a project in ethics or political philosophy developed by the candidate on a topic that is relevant as framework or background for the RRI work done in the first part. Possible topics include responsibility in research, technology and public trust, bioeconomy and sustainability, and techno-moral change. The applicant should develop a project description of maximum 2000 words describing the main research questions, hypotheses, and theoretical and methodological approach. The project description should include plans for the OXYMOD RRI work, and how to integrate this in the overall project.


The successful applicant must have:

  • completed at least five years of higher education that includes a master's degree or other equivalent degree in philosophy, applied ethics or bioethics.
  • a strong academic record and a weighted average for the last two years of your master's degree equivalent to a B or higher in NTNU's grading scale.

PhD education at NTNU is organized in PhD programmes. Within 3 months after appointing the successful PhD scholarship holder, he/she must apply for admission to the PhD programme in history and cultural studies. For further information, please see

Terms and benefits

The position is remunerated according to salary level 50 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK 436.900, - annually (2018), of which 2 per cent is deducted for the State Pension scheme.

The appointment will be made in accordance with regulations for fellowship appointments at universities, and with regulations concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. A contract will be drawn up detailing the period of appointment and required duties. The successful applicant's work place will be at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
