Institute of Coding – Coventry University
£37,713 - £53,698 per annum
Full time, Permanent
On 25th January 2018, the Prime Minister Theresa May announced the launch of the £40 million National Institute of Coding, a key part of the government’s efforts to drive up digital skills through the Industrial Strategy, which will equip people of all ages with the skills they need. The Institute brings together a range of universities, industry, training providers and professional bodies to address the UK’s digital skills gaps. The Institute is led by the University of Bath and supported by the theme leaders - Coventry University, Aston University, the Open University and Queen Mary University of London.
The Institute of Coding (IOC) is a consortium of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), large corporations, SMEs, established industry groups, experts in the delivery of distance/non-traditional learning and professional bodies. The Institute will work to address digital skills gaps, and forge stronger links between industry and education providers.
Our vision is to enhance the education and employability of every IOC learner, and ensure that employers and individuals across the UK can access the digital skills they need to compete in the global digital economy. This unique and innovative collaboration has been made possible with £20m from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and match funding from universities and industry partners. The IOC will develop and deliver innovative, industry-focused higher education across the UK. It will develop accredited degree programmes and short courses aimed at professionals, as well as working to widen the participation of women, returners to work, and hard to reach groups. Digital skills are becoming important in a range of professions so we also aim to target these multiple industry sectors; including manufacturing, transport, healthcare, and the creative economy. As a core partner, Coventry University is committed to the success of the IOC, and we are establishing a dedicated team to achieve this.
We are looking for people who are keen to work in a demanding but rewarding environment, people who recognise the need for digital upskilling across industry in the UK, and want to be a part of the solution. One thing is clear: you want to make a difference. If this sounds like you, we invite you to apply for the exciting new posts we are creating to support the IOC.
The IOC Senior Lecturer role is an integral part of the Coventry University IOC team. The post holder will play a leading role in curriculum development and teaching programme delivery. You will lead on curriculum development, and course management supporting the IOC’s activities across a variety of priority teaching areas such as data driven application, machine learning, cybersecurity and programming. You will engage actively in teaching and assessment in IOC programmes at all levels and CPD course development with a particular focus on data driven application and machine learning applications.
You will lead on innovation in teaching in areas such as modular teaching framework, student learning record, learning analytics and student software house. You will need to work effectively as an IOC team member, chairing committees and working groups, and where appropriate line-managing and mentoring other members of staff. You will undertake professional development and scholarly activities in support of teaching and scholarly activities, and support of student welfare.
Coventry University is an ambitious, award-winning university, working globally with industry to help improve knowledge, skills and productivity. We aim to align our work closely with the UK’s Industrial Strategy whilst at the same time responding to national and regional strategic priorities. We are proud to be one of the Institute of Coding’s lead partners, helping the government to realise its ambitious digital economy strategy. Ranked 12th place in The Guardian University Guide 2018, we are also positioned in 8th place for Mathematics tuition and 26th for Computer Science & Information Systems.
