Dean, School of Economics

Singapore Management University (SMU) is seeking to appoint a senior scholar as the Dean of the School of Economics (SOE).

One of six autonomous universities in Singapore, SMU was instituted in 2000 as a specialised university. SMU’s vision is to be an iconic global-city university in Asia that excels in tackling the world’s complexities, and producing leaders through its transformative education and multi-disciplinary research. The university houses six schools in the areas of Accountancy, Business, Economics, Information Systems, Law and Social Sciences.  It has about 10,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, over 350 faculty members across six schools, and over 16,000 alumni. SMU’s city campus is a state-of-the-art facility located in the heart of downtown Singapore, fostering strategic linkages with businesses, government and the wider community.

School of Economics

Established in 2007, SOE is recognized internationally as a leading centre for economics research particularly in the field of Econometrics. The school ranks 4th in Asia and 64th globally (Tilburg University’s Top 100 Economics Schools Research Rankings 2012-16), an impressive record for a school with a relatively short history. The school has a vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment with 50 full-time faculty and over 1000 students. SOE educational offerings include (i) the Bachelor of Science in Economics programme with tracks in Quantitative Economics, - Maritime Economics and Real Estate and two second majors in Actuarial Science and Applied Statistics; (ii) the MSc in Economics with tracks in Applied Economics, Econometrics, and Quantitative Economics, available for both part-time or full-time study; (iii) the Master of Science in Financial Economics; (iv) the Master of Philosophy in Economics; and (v) the PhD programme in Economics.

As the academic, strategic and administrative leader of the school, the Dean will be expected to solidify the distinctiveness of SMU’s undergraduate offering and seize opportunities to realize ambitious plans for the School.

He/She should have the leadership abilities to help nurture and mentor faculty to assume greater responsibilities, further strengthen the school’s research portfolio and academic programmes, and reach for still higher quality students.

The ideal candidate will have excellent academic and professional credentials to merit appointment as a full professor in economics. The candidate must have a proven record of academic leadership in a school of at least similar scope and complexity, a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and inclusively with a wide range of internal and external partners and a demonstrated record of interest in Asia. The right candidate will be a strategic thinker, excellent communicator and someone with strong organizational acumen.

Full evaluation of applications will start from end-February 2018. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The successful candidate will be expected to start in January 2019.

The application package should include (in electronic form): a cover letter describing relevant management and leadership experiences, teaching and research interests, and a full curriculum vitae. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for more information. The application package should be sent to the SOE Dean Search Committee, Singapore Management University, at the following email address: SOEDeanSearchComm@smu.edu.sg. For documents not available in electronic format, hard copies should be sent c/o the following address:
