The division of Information Technology Services (ITS) at The University of Queensland provides an information environment that supports the teaching, learning, research and engagement objectives of the University and contributes positively to the student experience and the University’s reputation, in line with our values of Service, Team, Accountability and Results. It comprises three major sections located across the University’s campuses: Academic Services, Enterprise Support and University Networks. Also located within ITS is the internationally recognised network security group, AusCERT, which provides internet security services throughout Australia and New Zealand. ITS manages core networks not only for the whole of The University of Queensland but also, on behalf of the Queensland Regional Network Organisation (QRNO), works with Queensland universities to manage access to the national university network (AARNet). ITS also operates Supercomputers and many of the University’s largest servers.
AusCERT is a leading Cyber Emergency Response Team for Australia. As a not-for-profit security group based at The University of Queensland, AusCERT helps members prevent, detect, respond to and mitigate cyber and Internet based attacks. Formed in 1993, AusCERT is one of the oldest CERTs in the world and was the first CERT in Australia to operate as the national CERT, which it did until 2010. AusCERT monitors and evaluates global cyber network threats and vulnerabilities, and remains on-call for members after hours. AusCERT publishes the Security Bulletin Service, threat intelligence and other relevant resources for information security and IT professionals.

The DevOps Engineer role is responsible for programming tasks within AusCERT’s unique environment, under the direction of AusCERT’s Senior DevOps Engineer. The AusCERT Analyst team use a variety of open source tools, tactical solutions and some in-house developed systems. This role will be assigned one major project such as integration of several open source tools, or an in-house web application to be used by the Analysts to deliver information security related services to members. On occasion the DevOps Engineer may be called upon to take a break from major projects, and work with one or more of the Analysts to deliver a short, tactical solution for a problem such as develop tools for analysing data for a particular incident or detection methods for a new vulnerability, for example.
All of AusCERT’s DevOps Engineers are physically located with the Analyst team, and actively participate in information security training, knowledge sharing and general discussion. Ideas for relevant products and services for AusCERT’s members are actively encouraged from all team members.
The successful applicant will show an active interest in information security and related technology topics. This role, although focused on software development, is heavily involved in the information security aspects of technology. It can also lead to later placement within the AusCERT Analyst team (potentially at a higher HEW level), if certain criteria are met.
Applicants should demonstrate knowledge and experience with technologies such as Python (or another OO language), web technologies, version control such as Git and most significantly, secure coding standards.

The position is a 12 month fixed term appointment at a HEW Level 6 with an additional 15% loading, bringing the cash remuneration package to $85,338.13 - $91,959.18 plus employer superannuation contributions of 9.5% (total package will be in the range $93,445.25 - $100,695.30 p.a.).
