PhD Research Position in Feedback Control of Microorganisms, Fermentation
A PhD Research Fellow position within fermentation is available at the Department of Chemical Engineering. The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of up to a 1-year extension with 25% teaching duties upon agreement with the department. To undertake the teaching duties it is a requirement that the candidate speaks Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. The position is financed by the EU.

The research activity at the Department is extensive, and is organized in research groups. These are Biorefinery and fibre technology, Catalysis, Colloid and polymer chemistry, Environmental Engineering and reactor technology and Process systems engineering.

The Bio-process engineering group in NTNU seeks hard-working, creative persons holding a master degree in control engineering/modelling and/or fermentation, for our new European project “iFermenter”. The applicant will apply real-time feedback control and optimization methods in fermentation of bacteria. We will not only measure and control the traditional fermentation conditions (e.g. temperature, O2, feeding) but we will use novel and exciting tools to acquire measurements from the cell factories themselves: The candidate will work with measurements of real time expression rate and cellular growth values, and will control those to achieve optimal production of rare antimicrobial peptides.
He/she will work with control systems, matlab, microbial fermentation systems, modelling and optimization.

The applicant must have an MSc in Chemical Engineering (or equivalent). The candidate should be proficient with documented (courses or master thesis/project work) experience in at least one of the following:
- aerobic laboratory fermentation of bacteria, including control applications. We accept both process engineers and biotechnologists.
- process and/or electronics feedback control systems, with good programming skills in Matlab.
The candidate will work in our new real-time feedback control fermentation laboratory in NTNU, using state of the art technology (e.g. mass-spec, HPLC, multiplexer NUMERA system and flow cytometer).
The regulations for PhD program at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies is required. Further requirements are an average grade of A or B for the two last years of the MSc program (within a scale of A-E for passing grades where A is best). Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree:
The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. It will be considered an advantage to also master spoken and written Norwegian.
We prefer to start the position during June to August 2018, but we will consider other options from excellent candidates.
Terms of employment
The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.

The position as PhD is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
