The Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant in Photonic Communication Systems Research.
Having undergone exponential growth in capacity since its commercial introduction in 1975, the optical fibre communication network is rapidly approaching a significant capacity crunch. The next barrier to full exploitation of the power of optical fibre communication is the installation of fibre to the home. This project will investigate the application of parametric optical amplifiers in high bit rate optical access networks. 

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proficiency at least two of the following fields; four wave mixing based devices applied to telecommunications systems,  numerical modelling of high capacity long haul optical transmission systems, measurement and analysis of high speed coherent signals, and passive optical networks. They will join an established team within the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies under the supervision of Professor Andrew Ellis, will carry out research in purpose-built photonics communications research facilities at Aston University, and will involve collaboration with industrial project partners with operating to short timescales. Training opportunities will be provided to acquire appropriate and experimental and numerical research skills. 

Applicants for this position should have – a first class honors degree in electronic engineering, applied physics or related subject, a PhD in a field allied to photonic communications or equivalent industrial experience in the photonic communications industry, technical skills appropriate to the amplified access networks and would be free to travel throughout the European Economic Area.
