The Australian Centre of Excellence in Robotic Vision (see conducts cutting-edge research in robotic vision, SLAM and machine learning. The Adelaide node of the Centre is part of The School of Computer Science which hosts the largest computer vision and image analysis research group in Australia, with over 60 members including academics, research staff and students. We work on a mixture of fundamental and commercially oriented research projects in computer vision and machine learning, and visual sensing for robotics. We have a very strong track record of publications in the top venues

We seek to fill 2 post-doctoral research positions within the Australian Centre of Excellence in Robotic Vision (see

The posts will be funded from long-term Australian Research Council grants to Professor Ian Reid, Associate Professor Gustavo Carneiro and colleagues, investigating life-long learning for visually navigating systems and robotic scene understanding. Likely research areas will include; Bayesian deep learning, especially zero-shot and few-shot learning; uncertainty on deep-learning; the interplay between geometric vision and deep learning visual SLAM; and large-scale object recognition.

Salary: (Level B) $94,135 - $111,788 per annum.

For suitably qualified individuals we will consider (Level C) $115,310 – $132,966.

Superannuation: An employer contribution of 9.5% applies.

Term of position: This fixed-term contract is available immediately for a duration of 2 years in the first instance with possibility of extension thereafter.

Eligibility Criteria: The successful candidates will have a PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or other related discipline, and will have a strong publication record, commensurate with opportunity and experience. In addition, a level C appointment must in addition show postdoctoral experience of at least 3 years and demonstrated leadership roles in research and PhD supervision. The appointed individuals will have existing expertise in computer vision, machine learning, robotics and/or statistical and numerical methods.

Position requirements

To be successful you should have:

  • Have or be about to complete a PhD (or equivalent qualification) or have equivalent industrial experience in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence or other closely related area
  • A good first degree in Engineering, Computer Science of a related discipline
  • Publication record commensurate with experience and opportunity
  • A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team, including with industrial partners
  • Expertise and experience in computer programming, especially in Python, C++ and Matlab
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communication scientific ideas to an expert audience, both orally and written.
