1 Post doc position in the field of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) related to development of Li-ion batteries is available at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture.

The position is part of the project Bio-degradable Li-ion battery anodes (BioBatt), which is funded by the Research Council of Norway. BioBatt is an interdisciplinary research project. The largest part of the project focuses on developing a new type of anode for Li-ion batteries (LiBs), based on naturally occurring silica, but it involves a significant activity on responsible research and innovation, which is the task of this 2-year post doc position. 

Project Description 

This project includes a RRI perspective to create social robust knowledge. The RRI part will be led by Professor Marianne Ryghaug, Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture. The project aims to pursue four dimensions of responsible research and innovation in and around the development of Li-ion batteries to be i) reflective ii) responsive iii) anticipatory and iv) inclusively deliberative. In the project, we will particularly elaborate the two last dimensions and see how they can be translated into practice by use of qualitative social science methods. An important task is to study anticipations related to the development of full cell Li-ion batteries in order to facilitate ‘anticipatory governance’, i.e. capacity to confront challenges that are unknown  and organize deliberative processes drawing on empirical methods and techniques such as scenario workshops, technology assessment and public engagement efforts like dialogue meetings. The goal is that social actors such as scientists, citizens, policy makers, business people, etc. work together during the whole research and innovation process in order to better align the technological research process and its outcomes with the values, needs and expectations of society, in line with the RRI approach.

The project is led by Associate Professor Fride Vullum-Bruer, Department of Material Science and Engineering. Thus, the largest part of the project is in the field of electrochemistry and material science. Two of the post docs in the project will work on fundamental studies of the silica anodes and optimization of the silica anodes for full-cell implementation. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the charge/discharge mechanisms and degradation behavior and in the end to be able to develop more efficient, sustainable and less resource intensive batteries.  Li-ion battery technology poses many challenges with respect to cost, resource availability, safety, and a high level of energy consumption and use of toxic elements in the production of the batteries. This type of batteries is still expected to dominate the battery market for portable electronics as well as electric vehicles in the near future. Thus, it is important to address and solve the above-mentioned issues. 

It will be important for all three post doc candidates to work closely together in order to be successful in attaining the goals of the project. The person chosen to the RRI post doc position will be required to keep in close contact with the project manager and her research team.


  • The successful applicant must hold a PhD in Science and Technology Studies or other relevant related fields of empirical social science. 
  • Experience with Responsible Research and Innovation projects is considered advantageous. This includes, but is not limited to, public engagement and action research. 
  • Experience with research management will also be highly appreciated. 
  • Since interdisciplinary work is essential for the success of this project, it is considered positive if the candidate can demonstrate experience from similar work environments. At least, the candidate should be interested in interdisciplinary collaboration. 
  • The candidate must have the ability to work independently and in groups, possess good communication skills and be fluent in both written and spoken English

Terms of appointment

The position of postdoc is placed within code 1198 of the State salary regulations, and is remunerated according to salary level 57 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK 490.500 – per year. Two percent of the gross salary is deducted and paid into the State Pension scheme.

The RRI post doc position will be placed at Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture, and the successful candidate is expected to have the department as her/his daily workplace. The post doc will be part of a group conducting research in the field of energy, environment and climate, headed by Professor Marianne Ryghaug, as well as the group on responsible research and innovation, headed by dr. Heidrun Åm.

The appointment will be made in accordance with regulations for fellowship appointments at universities, and with regulations concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. A contract will be drawn up detailing the period of appointment and required duties.
