To educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day.
The Intermediate Care unit is an integral part of the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital which provides 24/7 state-of- the-art preoperative care and medical boarding.
This Veterinary Technologist I recovers patients from anesthesia, provides peri-operative care, promotes overall patient comfort, administers medications, and communicates as needed with IC team, senior nurse on duty and supervisor as needed.
Note: This position works four, 10 hour shifts/week.
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
- An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology
- One year of experience assisting in animal surgery, administering anesthesia to animals and/or providing post-operative patient care.
The ideal candidate will possess the following highly desired qualifications:
- Certified Veterinary Technologist, Registered Veterinary Technologist, or Licensed Veterinary Technologist
- One or more years of experience in an Emergency and/or Critical Care position
- Demonstrated experience providing customer service in fast-paced environment (i.e. high traffic, stressful, or rapid problem solving)
- A strong desire to learn and advance medical and technical knowledge base
Essential Job Duties
Job Duty Category Patient Care Duty/Responsibility
- Provide care to hospitalized patients in Intermediate Care.
- Recover patients from anesthesia, properly administer medications and fluids as needed, and provide overall patient comfort, under the direction of the primary VTH clinician and according to IC & VTH protocols.
- Work in partnership with the PVM student assigned to the case, and the primary VTH clinician.
- Communicate with other services regarding the care and transport of patients as necessary within departments of the VTH, and transfer patients as needed.
- Accurately perform basic drug calculations, observe and recognize changes in patient status, communicate effectively with the IC team, and demonstrate caring behavior with all patients.
- Ensure patient readiness for discharge from the VTH.

- Maintain equipment in IC, and submit work orders as needed to make sure that repairs are made.
- Clean and upkeep IC unit.
- Check stock levels, and replenish as needed.
- Responsible for checking drugs and supplies for expiration date, and replacing when needed.
- Adhere to VTH purchasing and Central Supply protocol.
Percentage Of Time 20% Job Duty Category Documentation and Billing Duty/Responsibility
- Record all relevant information into the patient’s medical record.
- Ensure that all IC patients have been billed accurately before being discharged from the VTH.
