Description of Work Unit

The Department of Animal Sciences has the unique mission of serving Colorado’s large and diverse livestock industries. Research, teaching and extension outreach activities in the Department of Animal Sciences focus on developing industry leaders and improving profitable production of horses and food animals through the application of science and technology, resource management and food product enhancement, with emphasis on addressing societal issues concerning food safety, product quality and value, animal care and management, and environmental impacts of animal agriculture.

Position Summary

This part-time temporary position provides care and maintenance of horses and facilities utilized by the CSU Dept. of Animal Sciences/Equine Sciences program at the Temple Grandin Equine Center the National Western Complex located in Denver, Colorado.

Required Job Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent required.
  • Experience caring for horses including feeding, providing housing, monitoring general health and providing basic veterinarian care, blanketing horses, leading, walking, and transporting horses, and evaluating horses for lameness, vices, or other unwanted conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 80 pounds approximately four times per day.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather, including dust, moist, hot and cold conditions.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Bachelors degree in equine sciences, animal sciences, or related field
Veterinarian Technician associates degree or vocational degree
Previous work experience at an equestrian boarding or training facility, equine veterinarian hospital, or equine assisted therapy center

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Equine Care Duty/Responsibility

  • Provides care for the well-being of horses, including feeding and watering horses, blanketing horses, exercising horses, and determining if horses need to be housed indoors or outdoors, based on weather. Loads/unloads hay, grain and other feed and bedding, as needed.

Percentage Of Time 50% Job Duty Category Facilities Maintenance Duty/Responsibility

  • Provides security and cleanliness of facility, including locking and unlocking facility’s entrance gate and facility doors, cleans stalls and outdoor pens, cleans arena fencing, stall fronts and small set of bleachers, and provides general indoor arena cleaning, sweeping and fence repair as needed.
