Dean of Medicine
Dean of Medicine
The University of Dundee is the UK’s most research-intensive medium-sized university, with an international reputation for excellence and impact that attracts top-class students and academics from across the world. The University ranks in the UK’s top three for research income per capita, with 95% of staff working in areas of national or international excellence. It is one of only 12 UK universities to hold both a place in the Times Higher Education’s world top 200 universities and a Gold Award in the Teaching Excellence Framework. The University is now seeking to recruit a Dean of Medicine.
The Medical School enjoys a superb reputation for medical education, and performs very well in graduate employability. It offers a particularly flexible approach to teaching with a joint graduate-entry MBChB programme with St Andrews and significant online delivery to large numbers of student cohorts. The school came first in the UK for clinical impact in REF 2014, and 4th for overall satisfaction in the 2017 NSS. It has established very effective working relationships with NHS Tayside.
Reporting to the Vice-Principal (Provost), the new Dean will be tasked with developing and delivering a vision for the school in alignment with the University strategy. The postholder will grow the school’s research capacity, investing in strong academic appointments that will enhance the school’s research performance in the next REF. Other priorities include: Promoting greater collaboration with other disciplines, in particular Life Sciences; growing postgraduate, CPD and international provision while maintaining quality; continuing to cultivate strong relationships with the NHS; and ensuring the University has influence at Scottish and UK national levels in relation to health. The school currently has circa 3100 students, 600 staff (including 300 academics) and a £55.5m annual income. The appointee will be a member of the University Management Group and the Deans’ Group.
The University seeks a visionary leader, who may well – but need not – be a clinician. The successful candidate will bring strong leadership credentials in research and teaching as well as senior-level management experience in a medical school. The postholder will be capable of motivating and inspiring confidence in the School of Medicine and across the wider University.
Negotiation skills and the ability to broker effective relationships and make tough decisions will be critical, as will an understanding of financial imperatives, a collegiate approach and the ability to win hearts and minds.
