Professor in Fashion – ADS17/25
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
We are seeking to appoint a Fashion Professor to join the senior leadership team of Northumbria School of Design.
Northumbria University has an international reputation for its Design work and we have built strong partnerships in the Design and the Creative Industries. Our partners include the AHRC, ERDF, other leading Academic Institutions, the UK Design Council and key global industrial corporations. We are now seeking to recruit leaders in Design from both commercial and academic sectors to further develop our research and reputation across the disciplines of Fashion, Industrial and Communication Design.
Design is an important element in creativity, innovation and problem solving. Research for, in and through Design is globally recognised as central to the development of new ideas for living and underpins new visions of the future. Practice based Design research in this context can make profound contributions to society, culture, industry and the human experience. Through these new appointments we will develop our Design strategy, enhancing our understanding of Fashion Design as a discipline and as professional practice, embracing design-led innovation, socio-cultural, ecological, environmental, technological and methodological perspectives.
The successful candidates will, in addition, contribute to undergraduate and masters-level teaching, supporting collaborative projects with external organizations as members of the core academic design team. They will undertake high-quality research and and develop related external funding bids, making a significant contribution to the next REF. They will also recruit and supervise Fashion Design PhD students in scholarly and practice-led research; mentor colleagues new to research and take an active leadership role within the Faculty. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for ambitious, highly qualified Fashion Design academics, whether from an academic, scholarly or professional practice background.
You will hold a PhD or equivalent, and will have developed an excellent publication and research track record or industrial equivalent, in scholarly Fashion Design studies. It is essential that you have exceptional written and verbal communication skills; relevant teaching and postgraduate supervisory experience; people and organisational leadership skills; and the ability to develop and ‘win’ significant external funding bids. You will also be able to demonstrate a willingness to work as part of a team and to take on administrative and management tasks, as required within a vibrant Design School.
