Northumbria School of Design is one of the world’s leading Design schools. Located in Newcastle upon Tyne; as a department within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences, Northumbria School of Design has a global reputation for excellence in research and teaching.

We are looking to appoint an outstanding academic leader with an international research profile as Head of the Northumbria School of Design. In addition to being Head of Department, you will also be Professor in any of the disciplines represented in the department. After 5 years of your appointment as Head, you will, following  a period of sabbatical leave, have the opportunity to return to the Department to focus on research, teaching and scholarship in your Professorial role. 

The School houses 3 distinct subject disciplines. Communication Design - including a growing community of Human Computer Interaction specialists. Industrial Design - a community that ranges from Design Makers to innovation Design specialists, and has students working on programmes from 3D Design and Design for Industry to our flagship MA in Multi-Disciplinary Innovation. Finally, Fashion – a community that continues to develop Northumbria’s reputation as a leading provider of Fashion education in the University sector, with award winning graduates. All our Design programmes are explicitly outward facing and delivered in partnership with industry, and all have outstanding graduate outcomes for our students. At Northumbria, Design is also underpinned in all areas by fundamental research and it is our strategic priority to continue to develop that research base.

As a member of the Faculty Executive team, you will lead, grow and develop the future of the department, in line with our REF success and the University Vision. You will be supported by the Department’s strong team of Professors, and will be responsible for leading and managing the Academic team in delivering excellence in all areas of activity. In addition, you will make a strong personal contribution to the academic profile of the Department and Faculty through your contribution to research and teaching.

As Professor, your ability to think and act strategically adapting to the changing external environment is key to success in this role. You will have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and proven ability to influence and facilitate the development of others to achieve desired results. A successful record of leadership, management and development is essential.
