Queen’s National Scholar in Legal and Political Philosophy

The Faculty of Law at Queen’s University invites applications for a Tenured/Tenure-track position as a Queen’s National Scholar in the area of legal and political philosophy at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The preferred starting date is July 1, 2018. Candidates holding an existing tenuretrack or continuing-adjunct position at Queen’s are not eligible.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in general jurisprudence, constitutional theory, private law theory, or political philosophy. Without limiting the call for applications, the Faculty particularly seeks a candidate with research and teaching interests in legal pluralism, non-Western legal or political philosophies, or postcolonial legal theory, or who could enrich the Faculty’s course offerings and research relating to the position of Indigenous peoples in Canada and elsewhere.
Save in exceptional circumstances, the successful candidate will have a JD/LLB or equivalent and a doctorate in law or a cognate discipline completed at the start date of the appointment. The main criteria for selection are academic and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of the Faculty’s programs. In addition to traditional forms of scholarly output, the Faculty will also consider law reform activities and other contributions to policy and practice.
Candidates must also provide evidence of an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centred environment, and to participate actively in the activities of Queen’s collaborative Program in Political and Legal Thought.
The successful candidate will be required to make substantive contributions through service to the Faculty, the University, and/or the broader community. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. All positions are subject to final budgetary approval by the University, and all appointments are subject to review and final approval by the Principal.

- Cover letter (including one of the two statements regarding Canadian citizenship/permanent resident status specified in the previous paragraph);
- Current Curriculum Vitae (including a list of publications);
- Copies of all university transcripts;
- Copies of sample publications;
- Statement of teaching interests and experience, including teaching experience and supervision at both the J.D. and graduate levels (include course outlines and evaluations if available);
- Statement of current and prospective research interests.
- Letters from at least three referees sent directly by the referee to the address below.
Electronic applications in PDF format are strongly preferred. Applicants should also supply information concerning any interruptions in their academic career. Writing samples will not be returned and incomplete applications will not be considered.
Referees should also submit letters of support directly to the same email address below by January 2, 2018. However, if letters from referees are not available by this date, they should be submitted as soon thereafter as is possible. The Committee may still consider applications after this date.
