Data Visualisation Librarian

This is an exciting new opportunity to develop a University-wide infrastructure for data visualisation library services in the context of a new library on the University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus.
The University has developed a new Digital Research Environment Strategy. It is ambitious with an overall aim to move the University into the top 60 globally (currently 84th). Within this, there is strategic imperative to develop support services for research data and exploit new opportunities. The Library focus Ningbo has greater emphasis on new and emerging areas, including: the real-time visualisation of international measurement and metrics for research, such as SciVal, to give strategic research outputs the highest possible edge, influence and impact; innovative big data analytics, such as data capture, mining and analysis; and, the Internet of 'Things' where large-scale data visualisation technology in libraries can be networked through APIs, allowing librarians to collaborate with researchers to connect the physical and digital worlds.
The role holder will ensure that connections are made between new and emerging library service development and the university research strategies, including the Digital Research Environment Strategy. The Data Visualisation Librarian will work in partnership with colleagues from across the University to implement the strategic potential for a coordinated data visualisation service and new ways of working across the full range of research and innovation activity in Ningbo.
The role holder will be required to establish a University-wide profile, forge strong links with key academics, build networks across the University and work in partnership with others, ensuring research impact through data publication is maximised. The post holder will develop and implement an environment which encourages and enhances researchers’ capacity to derive value from both active and archival research data.
- First degree (or equivalent) or substantial relevant experience;
- Qualification in Librarianship or Information Management or Computer Science;
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to express complex concepts and ideas in clear, concise everyday language, both verbally and in writing;
- The ability to motivate and inspire others;
- Knowledge of primary and qualitative software tools utilised in research;
- Knowledge of qualitative software packages, such as Gephi, Nvivo and Tableau;
- Knowledge of emerging trends, tools, technologies and methods in research data visualisation;
- Knowledge of national and international best practice and standards in research data, such as data security, active and archival data, data management planning;
- Knowledge of research methods, lifecycles and practices, such as research ethics, reproducibility, data analysis;
- An ability to work effectively in a team environment with colleagues from different professional backgrounds;
- An ability to prioritise and to schedule workloads in the face of conflicting demands, within resource limitations;
- Commitment to meeting the needs of University staff and research students;
- High levels of digital literacy, such as repositories, digital preservation.
- High level data skills, such using APIs to extract data in real-time.
- Experience of developing and providing services in support of research, and strategic planning;
- Experience in using one or more object orientated language, such as C++, Java, Python or R to visualise research data;
- Experience of policy development and implementation in a HE environment;
- Proven ability to learn new technologies;

- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant area (or equivalent);
- Formal qualification in project management (PRINCE 2, APM) or equivalent;
- Qualification in programme management (MSP or equivalent).

- Proven understanding of best practices in the creation and communication of effective research data visualisations.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Expert Leadership in Research Data and Data Visualisation
- Develop an expert understanding of the challenges in research data and data visualisation to inform senior stakeholders at UNNC including Directors of Research, Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee and Management Board.
- Shape high level research data policy and embed in established UNNC policies.
- Turn policy into practice, ensuring the development of clear guidance for the research community in the use of the emerging high technology infrastructure at UNNC.
- Lead the strategic alignment of research data visualisation, ensuring that development responds to needs of Schools and Faculties.
- Create a new knowledge base and networks to identify and coordinate the potential UNNC response to national and internal big data and open data initiatives, including partnerships with the University’s established data services across campuses.
- Set up and establish appropriate research data governance arrangements.
- Manage and mitigate risks and issues, escalating as necessary.
2. Specialist Consulting Services and Research Data Skills Teaching
- Ensure the digital capabilities for data visualisation that researchers need are defined, developing a clear understanding of the current and future needs in Ningbo.
- Provide consulting services to staff and postgraduate students in the creation of research outputs, such as maps, charts and graphs.
- Deliver a service to key Principle Investigators in priority research areas in the production of timelines and infographics.
- Support senior managers at UNNC by producing dashboards of evaluation metrics in real-time, collaborating with external suppliers of analytic services.
- Develop a cross-campus understanding of visual data issues, ranging from collecting and analysing data to the limits of data visualisation.
- Enhance the digital capabilities of researchers at UNNC through supporting the development and delivery of library research data skills teaching programmes, such as for PhD students.
3. Service Development and Quality Assurance
- Develop services in line with UNNC priorities, innovating and learning from the best-in-class digital infrastructure elsewhere.
- Ensure that service definitions, levels and targets are appropriate, agreed with stakeholders and that they are delivered.
- Inform and collaborate on the development of the research data technical infrastructure.
- Influence and inform funding and/or resource decisions in relation to research data support and infrastructure development across UNNC.
- Quality assure and steer the development of research data services to maximise support and infrastructure developed, including the investment in new digital technologies.
- Harness capacity to support research data across the global University.
- Line manage dedicated research data project staff.
- Support and facilitate negotiation of professional boundaries in a global University, so that Professional Services deliver seamless support and integrated service which can be sustained post projects.
- Develop and maintain frameworks and metrics to measure the success of research data and ensure collection of data for compliance monitoring.
4. Leading Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead on building and managing strategic relationships between Professional Services and Faculties in relation to research data.
- Ensure effective engagement at faculty level, and with directors of research, senior research administrators, and key Principle Investigators.
- Through engagement with Faculties, align research data policies and services to the needs of the research community.
- Engagement with strategic partners externally on behalf of the University.
- Maintain and develop relationships across Professional Services so that engagement and communication is joined up and effective.
- Work with colleagues across Professional Services to develop, plan and deliver an effective communication strategy, harnessing opportunities available across the global University.
5. Large Scale Data Visualisation Technology
- Work with colleagues in Procurement for the acquisition of best-in-class dig ital technologies for data visualisation.
- Work with colleagues in IT Services to co-ordinate the maintenance and configuration of large-scale technologies for visual displays for data and digital media in the Library.
6. Project Management Align with the Digital Research Programme
- Join colleagues across the global University in the implementation of the Digital Research programme.
- Provide project leadership and programme management including management of project team members and the initiation, co-ordination and activity management to successful delivery. This will include management of all aspects of the project and programme lifecycle including planning, delivery, benefits realisation and closure.
- Proactively work with LRLR Senior Management Team and colleagues across Professional Services to scope the sustainability challenge and shape of provision post project.
- Ensure the data visualization needs of researchers based in Ningbo are considered across campuses through liaison with Digital Research Manager and the Digital Research Specialists.
- Provide thought leadership for the development and design of data visualisation services to support research in Ningbo.
- Participate in training and staff development, as trainer or trainee as appropriate, to develop and foster relevant expertise and awareness for global engagement.
- Maintain a proactive and flexible approach to delivering work objectives and assisting other members in global engagement team as and when appropriate.
- Any other duties appropriate to the grade and role.
