The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong. It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s, and Bachelor’s degrees. It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,400. The total annual consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$7.5 billion.
The School of Optometry is one of five academic units in the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. The School offers the 5-year Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Optometry programme which is a registrable qualification with the Hong Kong Government. It also hosts the Centre for Myopia Research. The appointee will be required to:
(a) provide leadership in all aspects of academic activities, including teaching, research and services in the School;
(b) teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and supervise student projects and theses;
(c) contribute to the development and enhancement of teaching and learning;
(d) secure external competitive research grants, conduct academic research, publish in peer-reviewed journals;
(e) carry out academic and administrative duties as required; and
(f) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of School or his/her delegates.
Applicants should have:
(a) a PhD degree in Optometry or relevant disciplines, preferably specializing in Myopia, Ageing Eye and Neuroscience;
(b) substantial university teaching experience and an excellent portfolio of teaching in respective areas;
(c) substantial experience in academic programme planning, management and curriculum development;
(d) relevant experience in e-learning and blended learning strategies in teaching and scholarship;
(e) excellent records of publications in internationally recognized journals and successful bidding of external competitive research grants; and
(f) extensive local and international connections in research and professional capacities.
Preference will be given to those with a strong research orientation, the potential to publish in high quality scholarly journals and a good teaching record. Applicants with less experience will be considered for appointment as Associate Professor.
