The Communication Design discipline at the School takes a human-centred approach in expanding the scope of traditional ‘graphic design’.  Students develop their design knowledge and imagination, and learn how to strategize and shape communication experiences using a variety of media, with emphasis on creating identities, informational artefacts and systems, as well as user experiences.

The School is looking for a candidate who is willing to work in the environment that builds on the School's legacy of human-centred design in which design starts from understanding people.  For this job opening, the School is specifically looking for a scholar with a strong research and teaching background in graphic or communication design, with expertise in qualitative and/or participatory communication research methods. 

More specifically, the School is seeking a candidate who can demonstrate research and teaching proficiency in some combination of the following areas: (a) printmaking; (b) typography; (c) book and publication design; (d) information design; (e) exhibition/experience design; and (f) branding and visual identity.


The appointee will be required to: 

(a)    provide leadership in all aspects of academic activities, including research, teaching and service in the discipline; 

(b)    demonstrate research expertise and engage in scholarly activities to advance knowledge in the related fields of communication design; 

(c)    help the School in building up a research environment and agenda;

(d)    provide leadership in programme development, curriculum planning and research; 

(e)    teach at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels in the Communication Design discipline; and

(f)    work with industry and initiate funded research projects.


Applicants should have:

(a)    a doctoral degree in a specialised area of Communication Design or a related discipline; 

(b)    at least 12 years of relevant professional and globally recognised research achievements;

(c)    extensive knowledge of graphic/communication design and expertise in design research methodologies;

(d)    an excellent record of professional and scholarly achievements, including a record of academic publications and good reputation in the industry; 

(e)    a human-centred approach to communication design, with a high level of contextual awareness and a vision for the future development of the profession;

(f)    a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research and professional service; and

(g)    management experience in an academic or professional setting.

The job duty requirements and expectation will be in line with the appointed grade.
