The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong.  It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s, and Bachelor’s degrees.  It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,400.  The total annual consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$7.5 billion.

The Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies is one of the three departments in the Faculty of Business. The Department offers a full range of degree programmes in supply chain and operations management, maritime studies and others. The Department takes a multi-disciplinary approach to establishing an area of excellence in logistics, supply chain, and operations management. It strives to be a key player in Hong Kong’s pursuit to become an international logistics hub.

The Department’s research portfolio lies in both academic and applied research. Professional services to industries are also provided by the academic staff in the form of consultancy in such areas as efficiency and quality improvement studies, market and operational analysis, optimization, production, purchasing, and supply chain management.  The Department also runs various self-financed programmes tailor-made to meet specific industry needs. In particular, there are two specialized Master’s Degree Programmes in Quality Management offered by the Department in Hong Kong and Hangzhou on the Chinese mainland. Candidates need to demonstrate the capability to teach quality management related subjects at an executive level and be able to publish in top-tier academic journals.

Job Functions

The appointee will be required to: 

(a)    undertake research, programme/curriculum development and administration in the Department;
(b)    conduct research that leads to publications in top-tier refereed journals and awards of research grants;
(c)    engage in promoting research collaboration and grant-seeking, improving research publication output, and increasing the level of consultancies in the area of Supply Chain and Operations Management;
(d)    facilitate the Department to gain and increase its visibility and international connections;
(e)    conduct lectures and seminars at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
(f)    engage in supervising students of Research Postgraduate Studies; and 
(g)    contribute to academic and departmental administration.

 
Duties

The appointee, if appointed as Assistant Professor, will be required to:
(a)    teach and contribute to curriculum design and development at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels;
(b)    be an active researcher in terms of producing quality publications and securing research grants;
(c)    act as advisor and supervisor to students in groups as well as individually;
(d)    initiate, lead and conduct academic activities of significance and relevance to the discipline and profession; and
(e)    undertake administrative duties in relation to academic and departmental affairs, fundraising, departmental advancement, and public relations relating to the related field.

The appointee, if appointed as Professor or Associate Professor, will be required to:
(f)    undertake activities as stipulated in (a) – (e) above;
(g)    provide leadership in all aspects of academic activities, including research, teaching and service in the Department;
(h)    engage in promoting research collaboration and grant-seeking, improving research publication output and increasing the level of consultancies in a related field; and
(i)    facilitate the Department in gaining and increasing its visibility and international connections.

Qualifications 

Applicants for the Assistant Professor post should have:
(i)    a doctoral degree in a related field;
(ii)    qualities of creativity, initiative and leadership; and
(iii)    a strong commitment to academic and professional training and education.

Applicants for the Associate Professor post should have, in addition to (i) – (iii):
(iv)    experience in academic programme management; and
(v)    a high degree of proficiency in teaching and research in a related field.

Applicants for the Professor post should have, in addition to (i) – (v):
(vi)    an excellent international reputation as a leading scholar; and
(vii)    made significant contributions to and have impact on the related field.

Prior business/managerial experience in related industries will be an added advantage.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service
