The Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) Centre is a mature Centre in its 10th year of operation. Founded by Boeing and a number of aerospace partners (BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Meggitt and Thales) in 2008, it has grown to perform work in sectors such as energy, agriculture, human medicine and rail. Its members include: MOD, Alstom, Novartis, and James Fisher and Sons. In the first 5 years of operation the Centre developed generic technology. In the second 5 years of operation there has been an emphasis on Applied Research projects, with consequently higher TRLs (Technology Readiness Levels).

The Centre integrates a multidisciplinary research effort to develop cost effective component and system health management technologies capable of supporting ground and on-board applications of high-value, high-complexity systems. The IVHM Centre is a pan-university Centre and has drawn on skills and expertise from across the whole University to deliver projects.

Reporting to the Director of the IVHM Centre the job holder will develop research in the broad area of simulation and test for real aircraft sub-systems, e.g. Environmental Control Systems (ECS) or APU (Auxiliary Power Unit). This will be sponsored by the Centre’s Partners and probably be in the 4<TRL

The successful post holder will possess the following:

  • BSc/BEng or equivalent and PhD (or be near to completion) in Engineering or Science, with a good knowledge of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mathematics and thermodynamics.
  • Strong track record in research, including publication
  • Knowledge of one of the IVHM technology areas and Matlab
  • Research methodology and communications skills
  • Experience with industrial partners, demonstrated team leader
