The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts

SENIOR LECTURER IN PERFORMING ARTS RESEARCH

In a city renowned for its international outlook and connections, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts plays a unique and influential role in developing future generations of performing artists. The Academy's six Schools; Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music, Theatre & Entertainment Arts, and Chinese Opera, make the Academy a vibrant centre of practice, production, teaching and practice-as-research. Its outstanding reputation is reinforced by the quality of its performers and its partnerships with other centres of excellence locally, regionally and internationally. With international residencies, visiting artists and alumni, which include some of the most respected professionals in their disciplines, the Academy is committed to the training of future world-class performers and practitioners.

The Academy is unique in that performance and production outcomes are central to its programmes. Practice-as-research is also encouraged for its contribution to enhancing educational and performance outcomes by providing students with opportunities to develop skills that enable them to gain a greater understanding of their work as performers, artists or designers through a structured process of reflection and inquiry. This inquiry-based approach facilitates and enriches artistic and creative outcomes in the context of the stage and studio rather than the lecture hall or classroom.

The Academy is establishing a Centre for Performing Arts Research. The Centre will work with Schools to embed practice-as-research into existing performance and production modules across the Academy. It will also encourage staff to conduct research into their own practice as a means of ongoing professional development, providing opportunities to enhance the application of their art form through the investigative and reflective processes of practice-based inquiry.

The postholder will be responsible to the Assistant Deputy Director (Research and Interdisciplinary Studies) to help lead the development, preparation, implementation and delivery of Staff Professional Development courses in Practice-as-Research (PaR).  He/She is also responsible for teaching Professional Development courses in Practice-as-Research (PaR), mentoring staff and students undertaking research projects, and in instigating practice-based research projects.   Subject to negotiation, expected commencement date will be May 2018.
