University of Dundee
Dean of Social Sciences

The University of Dundee is the UK’s most research-intensive medium-sized university, with an international reputation for excellence and impact that attracts top-class students and academics from across the world. The University ranks in the UK’s top three for research income per capita, with 95% of staff working in areas of national or international excellence. It is one of only 12 UK universities to hold both a place in the Times Higher Education’s world top 200 universities and a Gold Award in the Teaching Excellence Framework. The University has risen an average 20 places in the league tables over the past three years. It has also ranked in the top 10 in the NSS for the last two years. The University is now seeking to recruit a Dean of Social Sciences.

Reporting to the Vice-Principal (Provost), the Dean will lead a large, complex, multi-disciplinary school spanning Law, Centre for Energy, Petroleum & Mineral Law & Policy (CEPMLP), Business & Management Studies, Geography & Environmental Science, Politics & International Relations, Psychology, Architecture and Urban Planning. The appointee will be tasked with developing a vision for Social Sciences. Particular priorities include: enhancing the school’s research performance; growing income and international student numbers; increasing collaboration between disciplines and schools; and creating a coherent identity that brings together faculty across a wide range of disciplines. The school currently has 3800 students, 200 staff and £25-27m annual income. The appointee will be a member of the University Management Group and the Deans’ Group.

The University seeks an outstanding individual, who is a strong advocate for the Social Sciences and has the ability to lead, motivate and inspire confidence across a broad range of disciplines. Strong candidates will have experience of leading people and running budgets. They will bring research credibility in a cognate field, and will ideally have had some experience of leadership in a growth environment. The ability to drive change effectively and take a corporate view will be critical, as will a team mentality, collegiate approach and commercial nous.
