2018-19 An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowships

School: Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Department/Area: Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies

The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University is pleased to announce the 2018-2019 competition for the An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowships in Chinese Studies. Applications are invited from scholars in any academic discipline, working on contemporary China or any period of Chinese history. Fellows will pursue their own research and contribute to Fairbank Center programs.

Basic Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates working in the humanities or social sciences. However, applications are also welcome from scholars in other fields. A strong working knowledge of Chinese and English is required.

Applicants may not be more than five years beyond the receipt of their Ph.D. at the start of the fellowship. Holders of a Harvard University doctoral degree are not eligible for this fellowship. Applicants must notify the Fairbank Center of any changes to the information provided in the application that may impact eligibility. Failure to communicate such changes may result in disqualification. If awarded the fellowship, the scholar must provide confirmation of successful completion of their Ph.D. degree, in the form of a diploma, certificate of completion from the degree-granting institution or a letter from the institution’s Registrar, by no later than August 1, 2018.

Additional Qualifications

In addition to maintaining his/her own research agenda, the fellow will provide assistance to affiliates of the Fairbank Center in ways that could include the following:

  • Organizing conferences and workshops
  • Leading training workshops for interested graduate students
  • Participating in Fairbank Center seminars and other events

Special Instructions

The fellowship period is from August 1, 2018 to July 31, 2019.

Total stipend for one year: $60,000

Health insurance benefits for the An Wang fellowship recipients will also be provided. Fellows must reside in the Greater Boston area for the duration of the fellowship.

Please submit the following materials to the online application system:

1. Curriculum vitae
2. A five-page, double-spaced research proposal
3. A writing sample
