Description of Work Unit

Consistent with Colorado State University’s land grant mission to make education accessible to all persons and groups, the Access Center develops the talents of those who have been historically underrepresented in post-secondary education (first generation, low-income, ethnically and racially diverse, and non-traditionally aged). By utilizing effective practices, we provide quality services to communities, individuals, and institutions resulting in student success and exemplary programs guided by an ethic of community and project accountability.

Position Summary

The Advisor for the Upward Bound program in the Access Center is responsible for group and individual student advising related to applying to and persisting in post-secondary education. The Advisor reports to the Assistant Director of Upward Bound.

The Advisor will be a full-time Administrative-Professional university appointment. This position requires a varied work schedule that includes evening and weekends, and requires substantial travel. The Advisor must maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License or have access to a licensed driver. The university will conduct a criminal and motor vehicle background check on final candidates.

We have two positions open, each position will serve different areas of the state.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, counseling, social work, or other related field.
  • 1-year experience advising or supervising/mentoring disadvantaged youth in an educational setting (According to the U.S. Department of Education, “disadvantaged” signifies an individual who meets low-income guidelines and who is a potential first-generation college student. A “first generation” individual is a person whose parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree.)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience planning and coordinating student training or event planning
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate student learning and academic skills development
  • Strong communication skills (speaking, writing, developing and presenting academic workshops, and/or presentations, use of computer applications)
  • Community relations experience (evidence of building collaborative community networks and programs, including work with school administrators and staff, community agencies)
  • Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) desirable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and relevant ability with, culturally diverse communities among potential target and constituent populations
  • Must have a commitment to travel extensively in the target area, including travel to target schools. Additional travel requirements include in-state and out-of-state college study tours to expose students to cultural, educational, and academic experiences
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Data management skills

Meet regularly with parents/guardians of participating students and design/present workshops for parent groups

Plan and implement interactive and effective classes and/or workshops during the academic year and during summer programs; facilitate and implement after-school, weekend and other instructional/tutoring sessions; and facilitate student access to academic resources in the target schools and community

Develop and maintain relationships between the program and community, and between the program and the target schools personnel

Develop and maintain a network of academic and career resources for the benefit of the program and participants and connect students with appropriate resources based on student needs

Maintain a specified caseload of students and provide advising, workshops, and enrichment events for students.

Advising for UB students includes meeting one-on-one with program participants to assist with the process of selecting courses that meet the HEAR (Higher Education Admission Requirements) for post-secondary universities. Advisors monitor semester schedules to make sure students are progressing in achieving 4 years of math, 4 years of English, 2 years of language arts, and 3 years of sciences. Advisors work collaboratively with high school post-secondary counselors to provide options for students to enroll in Advanced Placement high school courses, enroll in dual-enrollment college courses, and/or take community college courses.

Maintain records of program activities and student eligibility and performance

Assist with planning and supervising of several annual in-state and out-of-state, overnight multi-day trips to visit colleges/universities and expose students to regional/national cultural, educational, and career opportunities

Assume a major leadership role in one or more components of the summer program (e.g., Residence Hall Coordinator, Activities Coordinator, or Instructor)
