Advisor, Educational Talent Search Program
Description of Work Unit
Consistent with Colorado State University’s land grant mission to make education accessible to all persons and groups, the Access Center develops the talents of those who have been historically underrepresented in post-secondary education (first generation, limited income, ethnically and racially diverse, and non-traditionally aged). By utilizing effective practices, the Center provides quality services to communities, individuals and institutions resulting in student success and exemplary programs guided by an ethic of community and project accountability.
The Advisor for the Educational Talent Search program in the Access Center is responsible for group and individual student advising related to applying to and persisting in post-secondary education. The Advisor reports to the Assistant Director of Educational Talent Search.
The Advisor will be a full-time Administrative-Professional university appointment. This position requires a varied work schedule that includes evening and weekends, and requires substantial travel. The Advisor must maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License or have access to a licensed driver. The university will conduct a criminal and motor vehicle background check on final candidates.
Required Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in liberal arts, education, behavioral/social sciences, social work, communications or related field must be obtained by start date.
- At least one year experience advising, supervising and/or mentoring disadvantaged youth in an educational setting (“Disadvantaged,” according to the U.S. Department of Education, signifies an individual who meets low-income guidelines and who is a potential first generation college student. A “first generation” individual is a person whose parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree)
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience working with middle school youth and middle school outreach.
- Ability to facilitate student learning through academic and student development activities and workshops
- Strong communication skills (including ability to present effectively, write clearly, and demonstrated proficient use of computer applications)
- Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) desirable
- Strong community relations skills including the ability to develop and maintain relationships between and amongst the program, community and target schools.
- Available personal, reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and willingness and ability to travel extensively in the target area, including travel to the target schools up to four days a week.
- Ability to work irregular work hours when necessary including nights, weekends, and overnight events.
- Record keeping and data management abilities such as: maintaining records regarding program activities and student eligibility and performance, and submitting reports regarding student outcomes.
- Experience working with target population including middle school and high school students from first-generation/ low-income communities.

- Maintain a minimum student caseload, and provide counseling, assessment, information, workshops, leadership development, and cultural enrichment events for participating students.
- Plan and implement interactive and effective workshops during the academic year and during summer programs (specific to middle school & high school youth).
- Plan, implement, and supervise many one-day and several multiple-day trips to colleges/universities, educational and career sites in order to expose students to regional and national cultural, educational, and career opportunities.
- Recruit eligible participants into the program and develop a substantial wait-list of qualified potential participants.
- Meet regularly with parents of participating students, and design and present workshops for parent groups.
- Participate in the planning and implementation of summer residential programs for student participants on the University campus (Talent Search Academy, middle school college exploration visits, and other outreach activities).
- Coordinate and Manage on-campus middle school visits, off-campus college visits, high school engagement workshops, and career exploration visits.

- Contribute to and actively support efforts of the Talent Search and the Access Center staff teams, through meetings, retreats, program planning, collaboration on activities, and participation in Access Center committees.
- Participate in and contribute to program planning and professional development activities of the program, including appropriate conference and training opportunities when available, as well as the development of the staff team.
- Develop and maintain a network of academic and career resources for the benefit of the program and participants, and connect students with appropriate resources based on student needs.
- Other duties as assigned.
