Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

A PhD position is available at the NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Industrial and Mechanical Engineering. The appointment has a duration of 3 years.

Characterizing the microscopic changes in a material during its exposure to gaseous species is becoming increasingly popular in microscopy. In this work, the design, prototyping and testing of a novel environmental cell for chemical vapour based thin film deposition is planned. Reactive gases with a defined differential pressure will flow through the cell while keeping it at high temperatures. A customized gas delivery system shall be attached to the cell that has to be designed within this project. The work is interdisciplinary involving many industrial and scientific partners including companies and universities working on Micro- Electrical and Mechanical (MEMS) devices, environmental chambers for high-resolution microscopy, advanced vacuum equipment and chemical analysis.

The applicant must have an MSc (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering and a documented background in computer fluid dynamics simulation as well as excellent skills in computer aided design and system integration. Knowledge in major CAD environments and CFD analysis tools as well as in building experimental equipment are prerequisites. Further, the candidate shall have proven capacity and skills in writing and publishing scientific articles in renowned journals as well as dissemination at scientific conferences. She/He will consult various stakeholders from different fields. Experience in managing international industrial projects, a background in project management and strong language skills in English (oral and written) are prerequisites.

The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams. Proficiency to systematically carry out goal-oriented work, in combination with good skills to deliver oral and written presentation of research results, along with good collaborative capabilities will be emphasized. Excellent English skills—written and oral—are required.
