Database Administration Manager, IS&T Systems Operations
The Database Administration Manager provides oversight of locally-hosted and cloud-based database environments supported as a service by the Information Services & Technology (IS&T) department at Boston University.
Key activities include planning and execution of database administration activities, monitoring and maintenance of services, identification and implementation of approaches and tools for key metrics and proactive best practices, and leadership and collaboration across technical service and application-based teams. The Database Administration Manager is a hands-on technical position with responsibilities involving staff management and oversight of efficient operational processes including service request fulfillment, incident response, problem management, and management reporting for the programs his/her team supports. Administration actives also include staff resource plans for projects, enhancements, operational sustainment, and daytoday and on-call support activities. The Database Administration Manager has direct technical responsibilities in the delivery of database support and services and requires a working knowledge of various RDBMS environments (Oracle, SQLServer, MySQL, Sybase ASE, etc.), with deep knowledge in one or two environments, as is necessary to provide technical leadership and expertise. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are required to ensure proper alignment with service management teams, project teams, and application teams (clients) that are reliant on the database environments and services provided.
Requires a minimum of 8 to 10 years of professional experience in database administration within dynamic organizations. Must have working knowledge of various RDBMS environments (Oracle, SQLServer, MySQL, Sybase ASE, etc.), with deep knowledge in one or two environments, as is necessary to provide technical leadership and expertise. Knowledge and management experience in database systems operations and service management are essential, ITIL certification is a plus. Experience in managing technical staff and solid communication and planning skills are necessary for interfacing with all levels of the organization. Experience in suppoting higher education IT is desired but not necessary.
