The Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies (SLK), Institute of German Studies is seeking to fill the position of a

Junior Professorship (W1) in German as a Foreign Language/German as a Second 
Language (with Tenure Track)

by 01 July 2018. The Junior Professorship will be offered as a 4 year employment contract. Provided that her or his performance will be evaluated positively, employment may be extended to a total of 6 years. In the fifth service year, a tenure-track-evaluation takes place, after which, in case of a positive result, a permanent employment as a W3 professor for German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language is possible without further advertisement according to § 59 par. 2 SächsHSFG. This is based on the evaluation criteria mutually agreed upon at the time of commencement of service, which correspond to the requirements for appointing a W3 professor.

The incumbent will represent German as a Foreign Language (DaF) and German as a Second Language (DaZ) with linguistic focus in teaching and research. The initial teaching load is 4 semester periods per week. She/He shall represent the divisions DaF and DaZ in the bachelor and master programmes of German studies as well as in the teacher training programmes. In particular, the development of the supplementary subject German as Second Language (state examination) is one of the central tasks.

The incumbent is expected to actively co-operate at the Institute of German Studies, particularly with regard to the re-organisation of the bachelor and master programmes in the Faculty SLK and, of course, in the academic self-administration. The skills for conducting lectures in the English language are required. Furthermore, the incumbent will be expected to show willingness to engage in interdisciplinary co-operation, for example, within the framework of the Centre for Integration Studies and in the area of inclusion.

It is a prerequisite that the successful applicant has completed a relevant academic degree and a qualified doctorate in the field of German linguistics or language teaching methods (preferably with an emphasis on DaZ or DaF). Furthermore, the candidate can prove teaching experience as well as further scientific qualifications in the field of linguistics and language teaching methods of German as a Foreign Language (DaF) and German as a Second Language (DaZ). Experiences in dealing with qualitative and / or quantitative methods of empirical social research are desirable. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 63 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (Higher Education Act of the Free State of Saxony – SächsHSFG).
