Sydney Medical School

About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is Australia’s first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. We employ over 7600 permanent staff, supporting over 60,000 students. Within the University, the Sydney Medical School is a leader in research and teaching activities across its schools and network of affiliated hospitals and research institutes.

Within this context, Sydney Medical School is seeking to make three appointments at professorial or associate professorial level for those with a nationally competitive research fellowship funded position. Applications are sought from researchers across the spectrum of medical research from basic biomedical to population health. Preference will be given to areas of strategic priority for Sydney Medical School and the University, particularly in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, mental health and neurosciences, infectious diseases, respiratory or other areas. These positions will offer attractive start up packages as well as the possibility of conversion to continuing appointments, subject to an assessment of performance. Researchers whose current fellowship is administered through the University of Sydney are also eligible to apply.

These positions are intended for outstanding researchers with strong track records and whose research activities align with the research priorities stated above. It is expected that these positions will provide leadership, coordination and the fostering of excellence in research in the given research areas and make an important contribution to the Sydney Medical School. Consideration may be given to areas of strategic priority.

To be successful in this position you will have:

  • qualifications at PhD level or equivalent in health or medical research
  • proven track record in terms of grant funding, publication and student supervision
  • proven track records in terms of ongoing, independent research salary support
  • proven track record of providing institutional contributions in research leadership, coordination and development.

Term and remuneration

The successful applicant will be offered a fixed term appointment to the end of their current independently funded position with the possibility of a two year extension and a further appointment on a continuing basis. A generous start-up package will be negotiated for external applicants.

The successful applicant will hold the title of Professor or Associate Professor - the level of appointment will be commensurate with the appointee’s qualifications and experience, and a competitive salary package will be negotiated.
