The Department of Mathematical Sciences at NTNU conducts research on an international high level within the disciplines of algebra, analysis, didactics of mathematics, differential equations, geometry/topology, numerical analysis, optimization, and statistics. Part of the research is also conducted in close cooperation with other fields of science and technology at NTNU, as well as in cooperation with industry and external research institutions.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences wants to support highly motivated and excellent candidates within any of the Department's main research disciplines. The vacant PhD fellowships are intended to give promising candidates an opportunity to pursue a research activity on an advanced level leading to a doctoral degree.

The PhD fellows will be part of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at NTNU, and will have their workplace there. See http://www.ntnu.no/imf. The Department currently has around 60 PhD fellows.

Preference will be given to candidates who speak Norwegian or another Scandinavian language due to the need for teaching assistance in several of the introductory mathematics courses. The PhD fellows who speak a Scandinavian language will be employed for 4 years with teaching and other duties of approximately 25% of the total available time. The PhD fellows who do not master a Scandinavian language will be offered a 3-year appointment.

Applicants who have been short-listed will be invited for interviews.

Strategic considerations may be taken in the final selection of candidates.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a master’s degree within one of the research areas covered by the Department (algebra, analysis, differential equations, numerical analysis, optimization, geometry/topology, statistics and didactics of mathematics), or a corresponding education, and must also satisfy the requirement for entering the PhD programme at NTNU. See http://www.ntnu.edu/ie/research/phd for information about the PhD programme at NTNU.

The admission to PhD education at NTNU requires an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the last two years of the MSc, and C or higher for the BSc.

MSc students in their final year are also invited to apply. Employment will then be postponed until the master’s degree is finished.

The applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must document a thorough knowledge of English (equivalent to a TOEFL score of 600 or more).

Application requirements

The application must include the following:

  • A project plan written together with a potential advisor in the department.
  • Information about education background and work experience.
  • Any relevant publications. Joint work will only be considered provided that a short summary outlining the applicant's contributions is attached.
  • Certified copies of relevant transcripts and diplomas. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or similar documentation, which describes in detail the programme of study, the grading system, and the rights to further studies associated with the degree obtained.
  • Contact information for two references.
  • Documentation of fluency in the English language.

Applications are to be submitted electronically through this page. Preferably, the attachments should be submitted as a single file.

Terms of employment

The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programmes within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study
(see http://www.ntnu.edu/ie/research/phd).

The successful candidates will be required to enroll in a PhD programme within the period of employment, and must sign a contract regulating the starting date and duration of employment as well as the required duties.

The PhD fellowships are placed in salary code 1017, level 50 - 62 on the Norwegian government salary scale, gross income NOK 436 500 to 537 300 per year. From this salary, 2% will be deducted for mandatory membership in the National Pension Fund. Starting salary is expected to be at salary level 50.

The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government’s policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. NTNU wishes to increase the number of women in its workforce, and female candidates are therefore encouraged to apply.
